How turn my VPS into a webhost?
Hi
I just bought my VPS today.
I have the necessary details to login into the VPS computer etc and the control panel.
How can I host my website on this VPS?
Do I need to install a software on it first to turn it into hosting server?
I read a little here and saw that APACHE and My SQL are needed.
I am on a windows 2008 host with VPS software as Solus VM/ XEN.
I am new to all this and any guide or resource will be highly appreciated.
I have searched internet for terms like "how to host on VPS" etc, but I cannot find a solution on how to do it. Rather all of them start telling benefits of VPS etc.

Is your VPS managed or unmanaged?

Why are you using a Windows based server? Unless you have a specific need for it it's better to go with Linux LAMP.

Thanks for the reply.
When I installed VPS, i did not choose the option to install the cpanel, plesk etc.
I just selected none there.
Is there any way to change that?
For the Apache and mysql, which software can be installed on my windows serve 2008 edition?
Thx for your time.

It is unmanaged, but as stated above, I skipped the option of installing Cpanel etc earlier.

You should ask your provider to install Centos Linux and cPanel control panel on your VPS. This will get you started and you can start learning about Linux and the cPanel control panel will make it easy to administer the server.

cPanel is only for Linux.
For Windows, you'll want to use the Plesk control panel.

If you're only starting off with webhosting and not familiar with managing Linux or Windows servers, I'd recommend choosing Linux. More people want Linux hosting and it's probably cheaper for you.

Yes, as others stated you may want to start over and get a managed linux vps with whm/cpanel installed. These are the industry standards pretty much and you will find no end to the help files and posts about how to set things up with these tools.
Also, you never really said what you skill level is. Do you know how to run a server of any kind? This would help to know too.

@energizedit
I will provide more information now:
I am actually looking to run some softwares on the windows server as a pc as well.
So I guess I have to reword my question as:
Is it possible to use the VPS as a PC and also use it as a webhost for my website.
My current skill level:
I have installed CMS's on Wamp and XAMP without problems.
Don't know if that is any skill actually.
But I have not worked with servers before.

Ask yourself: "Do I really need VPS, or shared hosting account is good enough"

Some of the responses here are odd. There's nothing wrong with having a Windows based hosting platform. I use several. And like you, I sometimes run remote software (mostly to browse as proxy, for a VPS in another country).
You need two things to make this easy:
(1) Windows VPS with RDP access.
(2) Plesk 9 or Plesk 10. I prefer v9. Managed hosting would help.
Then you can do everything you'd asked about.
Plesk has a free version, I believe, useful for only one site. You may want to check into that. It used the free key "plsk.00000000.0000"

I feel like if you are having to ask these questions you probably shouldn't be in the hosting business. just my opinion....
