I got mine, free, from StartSSL - works great, support great
I got mine, free, from StartSSL. It works great. There are no browser warnings and the support is great. My site has 256 bit encryption. Most of the web sites of the companies I visit have 128 bit encryption, which is far better than no encryption. Here's the URL:
http://www.startssl.com/
P.S.
I got mine in December 2009. Good for one year and then you need to renew it. That's also free. No problems.

StartSSL is good, and works great, but since it's free many clients may not think good about it if you are going to use it on a site to sell products and services and do transactions.
If you are in Hosting business and trying to resell SSL, GlobalSign is a good option, they have plugins for WHMCS and recently introduced OneClickSSL plugin for WHMCS and WHM/cPanel too. I recently installed this OneClickSSL on all of my servers and loving it.

Lol, if you are to install SSL the normal way, you are going to spend equal time installing a paid SSL or StartSSL.

How would clients know StartSSL is free?

IMHO, few, if any, web site visitors, would know that the cert I got free, from StartSSL was free. The only ones who would know that are people who frequent forums like WHT and are interested in SSL certs.
There are *NO* differences, when I visit web sites of *major* corporations using SSL, or my own web site, with regard to browser appearance.
In my case, I am using the SSL for a Secure Contact Form, so visitors names, email addresses and information are encrypted; and not for Ecommerce, but if I had an Ecommerce site, I would not see any reason not to use a StartSSL cert, free or otherwise.
Support from StartSSL is super. Hopefully, if the OP buys a cert from another company, their support will be as good as the support at StartSSL.

Yeah I'll +1 StartSSL. Those who complain about it being 'free', that's just bad economics - unless you're customer base ARE snobs.
I've setup zillions of StartSSL certs for all kinds of things. Even one minor eCommerce site (for a major ecommerce site I'd go with verisign or something similar)

I am not saying StartSSL is bad, I myself use it.
I also know that many would not make any difference, also those who knows about these things they also know how SSL work, so again no issues.
But real world scenario is different, if you are using a free SSL or free script or free app for business, it does not go well with majority of clients.

We use COMODO. But I don't think COMODO is selling SSL for less than $10. But your hosting company can give it for less than $10 as a COMODO partner.

I don't buy SSL certs, so I really can't help you
because I get them for free. I have 65 domains
and also have the following message {cut/paste}:
You have purchased SSL certificates and at least
81 certificate(s) are not yet activated.
I buy and renew the domains and the SSLs are free
with their purchase/renewal. I use NameCheap.

2.) The certificate is for my company, what shall I do?
In the Class 1 settings (free), the only possible relationship between StartCom and the subscriber is with individuals, i.e. natural persons. StartCom has no relationship with the organization a subscriber may represents and acknowledges only the subscriber. All responsibilities according to the StartCom CA Policy are that of the subscriber personally, even in case he/she decides to obtain certification as an employee or representative of an organization.
Organizations should perform Class 2 validation and an organization name may only appear in a digital certificate at Class 2 level and higher.
