Question

Moving host

I've tried to do this myself but have failed and hopefully I can get some help.

I want to help my sister out by hosting her site, which is on foliosnap and host that site on my VPS on Knownhost.

I have created a subdomain lisatsering.dorion.us and replicated her current page at lisamarietsering.com using Wordpress.

1. What are the proper steps to move lisamarietsering.com to lisatsering.dorion.us?

2. My sister currently has her email address at lisamarietsering forwarded to her Gmail account. How can I retain her current email without breaking anything?

Forgive me if I have omitted any pertinent information and or have used the wrong terminology.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Are you both using cPanel as your control panel?

If so, simply login to her account and generate a full backup, this will backup everything including emails. Once you have the backup you can ask your provider to add it to your account as an addon domain. You can also ask them if it's possible for them to migrate everything for you manually via FTP, they will know what to do.

I wish it was that easy. I am but foliosnap is a service for those who don't want to use an actual web host. They make it really easy to get up a website up and running. Take a look at their FAQ to get an idea as to what they do.

From what I can tell all my sister had to do is enter her domain in her foliosnap account setting and then changed her DNS settings on GoDaddy to foliosnap's and she had a page up and running.

I see.. In that case your sister is going to have to contact FolioSnap and ask them for a copy of the website files (assuming you wish to have the same website?). Once you have the files you will need to upload them to your server, either using a sub-domain or addon domain. You can host your sister's domain on your account as an addon domain, if you have cPanel.

I have already created a new website as well as a subdomain on my domain.(lisatsering.dorion.us). I'm having problems getting her existing domain lisamarietsering.com to point to lisatsering.dorion.us. I have attempted to forward lisamarietsering.com to lisatsering.dorion.us with mask but all the links show, for example lisatsering.dorion.us/link not lisamarietsering.com/link.

Can you not host "lisamarietsering.com" on your VPS as an addon domain? All you would have to do is point the domain to your nameservers, add the domain to your cPanel as an addon domain, and then upload the website's files to the addon domain's directory (usually named the same as the domain) on your VPS.

Can't you set up an account on the VPS for the domain lisamarietsering.com (not for a subdomain of dorion.us at all), then change the nameservers at the domain registry to point away from FolioSnap and to your VPS?

I just tried to create an addon domain under dorion.us and was not able to do so.

"Sorry, you are not allowed to add any more than (0) addon domains! The domain below was not setup!".

I have sent a support ticket to Knownhost.

Awesome, thanks for the addon domain. I have modified my account under WHM to have unlimited addon domains. I am now in the process of uploading the site into the newly created lisamarietsering.com folder.

In the meantime, what about email? Do I have to mess with the MX record or anything of the sorts to be able to forward my sister's current email to her gmail?

Google will give you the MX settings to use.

I did the above and it's been 5 hours since I changed the nameservers to the ones that dorion.us is configured with and it's not working yet. Did I miss something?

It can take up to 72 hours for your domain to re-propagate again, be patient.

Are you sure about this? Sounds too easy...

I have to move a couple of domains from one hosting account to another, both on Bluehost/Cpanel. I asked their tech support for help on this, and they essentially said, "go hire someone, it's not easy."

I'm not a total newbie, in fact I've moved a few websites, but I don't get how the email stuff works.

Backup, restore to move files, this I get.
DNS settings, I know how to do.

But how do you create (recreate) domain email accounts on the new account before the DNS settings switch over? You try to create an account before moving the domain, there's no option to do so.
