CPU load, can someone pls explain?

With just two domains, no websites and one email address a NEW server run at the following.

Server load 2.04 (16 CPUs)
Load Averages: 0.77 1.16 1.15
(Checked several times today)

Compared to our current server at almost HALF the cost of above server and 200 + active websites and hundreds of emails.

0.17 (4 CPUs)
Load Averages: 0.13 0.19 0.14

Do I miss something, misunderstand the cpu usage or is something not right with the new server??

Maybe the output of the command 'top' will help us finding out whats causing that much load.

Hello,

Are you using a dedicated server or it is a VPS/Cloud server?

Because this CPU E5620 is coming with 4 cores eq 8 threads and not 12 or 10 ...

Please give us more information about this.

Do a cat /proc/cpuinfo for the full list

Anyway from your opening post I see the load average is declining so maybe it's because of some maintenance task that just completed and drove up load temporarily? Also I suggest you run top and then shift+p to sort by CPU usage from highest to lowest. That should give us an idea as to what process is using CPU time.

Anyway from your opening post I see the load average is declining so maybe it's because of some maintenance task that just completed and drove up load temporarily? Also I suggest you run top and then shift+p to sort by CPU usage from highest to lowest. That should give us an idea as to what process is using CPU time.
16 CPU's

Basically I don't worry so much about CURRENT load, but about the HIGH load for a server that's supposed to be almost double better than current machine.

Current machine with almost 800 domains. (can check almost any time except stats / backup runs and it's under 0.99)

Server load 0.47 (4 CPUs)

This new, almost unused machine many times over 1.00

Server load 1.07 (16 CPUs)

Frank,

One suggestion I have is you are runnning a 32bit OS on your server "venus" which has 16 cores and 24GB of RAM, I think you would get better use out of a 64bit OS.

Would you like to reload the OS with centos 64 w/ cpanel and see the results from that?

Please advise.

Hello,

I would recommend you to change your OS to 64Bit and do not use the PAE kernels.

It would help you to resolve this problem.

Best regards
