Question What to do with a monster VPS like this?

Not sure how many people here have visited LEB lately but this seems to be the hot post of the week:

    http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/chicag...ps-in-chicago/

My question is: what do people plan to do with this? I mean, Minecraft would probably ask for this much memory, but then again, how many people are actually interested in playing Minecraft? 0.001% of the Internet? Besides Minecraft, I do not think even installing MySQL + Apache + PHP without ANY optimization would use more than 1.5GB of memory. Obviously unless you live in Chicago, the box is perhaps too slow for you to run a graphical desktop there as well (and since Windows is not available anyways, who needs graphical desktop?)

Any other uses you could think of?

And I think although the RAM power is there, I highly doubt the CPU power of the VPS would be as good as my laptop that I am using right now since you are sharing the CPU power with a dozen other people...
I guess my point is, are there really many uses for a VPS like this or ChicagoVPS is just betting on the fact that nobody is ever going to use the full amount of resources?

I suppose the possibilities are endless.

2GB for $7 though... if they have figured out how to do that without overselling (based on the fact the XEN packages are the same price I suspect they don't oversell much) and actually make a sustainable profit then good luck to them.

I am 50/50 without knowing the company background or much about them at all unless they have limited it to say first 20 sign ups then this could make or break them.

I guess uses would be hosting a large amount of sites, cPanel Server, DA Server, Shoutcast Server, slow VMWare Server (free edition) (and would run like crap), Counter strike servers.

My fear for them would be that the minecraft fans catch wind of this and they sell 200 overnight and the nodes commit suicide.

    Fair point about the CPU.

I might just buy one of these out of curiosity to see what the situation is.

Is it Xen? Can you install your own kernel? Then split it into several smaller OpenVZ VPSes No idea what to do with the smaller VPSes though. Maybe just experiment and learn.

This offer is OpenVZ I should have been more clear, I was refering to thier standard packages on their site which interestingly for $7 from their site you only get 256mb ram.

Here is what I might use it for.

    1. Not use it.
    2. Use it as a MySQL instant replication server for my DBs.
    3. Use it to host a low resource web site.
    4. Use it to host a medium resource website.
    5. Use it to cut down on bandwidth usage of my main server. (I.E - host my images there).
    6. Not use it.
    7. Create a VPN, IRC bouncer, or something of the sort.
    8. Use it to host my friends' websites.
    9. Use it to host a charitable website.
    10. Not use it.
    11. Use it as a mail server.

EndServer, that was awesome! I needed a good laugh, that one hit the spot! I like it when we can interject a little humor into WHT, makes it more fun.

I made my comments on this offer on LEB. Its not possible, i don't care what they say. Its probably the most ridiculous offer i have seen to date.

Let's say it's a 48 GB node, that is 25% oversold. 60GB of RAM sold.

    60GB total RAM/2GB packages = 30 total packages.

    30 * 6 (assuming it's $6 after fees) = $180/month

Since you can get a 100 Mbps un-metered port for $100 a month, it is possible. It's probably never going to be profitable, but it really gets them out there. It's easily possible, just not profitable.

I'm wondering how much he oversells the servers and the exact vps node specifications....

What would happen if many clients buy a vps like that and actually use that amount of ram.... For just $140 per month you've got 40GB of ram with him:p

I think the majority of the people buying these will be minecraft users, so you can expect them to pass a policy banning minecraft like ipapco did.

Given the through-put IO tests that were done they're running a software RAID1. I'm figuring they're using 24G setups and will just stack it really high to break even. They stated they brought up a SINGLE fresh node for this all so it's obvious they're packing it pretty good. If we start seeing vz20+ then they got more, but as of right now it's just vz19 according to Chris.

Some of those LEB offers are more ridiculous than the concept of unlimited.

If that's what you get for $7, I'll gladly pay $15 for something sane. Or $30. Or $60.
I need a good server that I know works, not paid space on an experiment.

I often wonder how much people save after blowing money on hosts that disappear, or leave with paid time.
    False economics.

I don't happen to be in the market for another box right now, but if I was I would certainly give it a try.

I signed up for one yesterday out of curiosity, and it is on node 19, and someone who singed up like an hour after me was on 19 too.

I think honestly I would not be surprised if companies like IPAP.co are willing to take those kind of risk, I mean, honestly, when it is coming to die today or die 3 months later (and screw more people along the way), I think the choices are pretty clear, but really, Chicago VPS has such a solid reputation in the LEB community.

    Anyways, we'll see

All right, here is the 96MB review for them, I was surprised by how good the performance are like and honestly I really can not figure out how they could do it:

Take a look at it and feel free to tell me I did something wrong.

The only thing I would run to use 2 GB of RAM is 2 minecraft servers. Otherwise, 128mb is enough for me.
