    VPS suggestion for NYC access

Hi all, I'm new to the VPS scene. I'm looking for a VPS solution for these use cases:

    - Blogging (Simple, probably not going to be high traffic and be using a lot of plugins, for now...)
    - Low-traffic mail server
    - Hosting some personal projects

I think, given these, the following requirements should be enough (although maybe someone can guide me better on whether this is actually enough or too much, these are not hard requirements):

    - CPU: 1-2 cores
    - RAM: 512MB, burstable to 768MB or 1GB
    - HDD: ~40GB
    - Bandwidth: 1TB preferably
    - Location: NYC
    - OS: Ubuntu, having Arch is a plus
    - Root access, but I think this is pretty much a given (and why I'm moving away from shared hosting in the first place).

    Budget is about $20 - $25 a month.

Any suggestions about whether these requirements are reasonable and any suggestions for a VPS hosting provider?

In general, it's not easy finding an appropriate one since there's a lack of organization when it comes to reviews. It's easy enough to check a particular provider if I've found one, but hard to get a decent set of providers to investigate. Any tips on this?

    Thanks!

www.6sync.com is just outside of Manhattan in NJ and should meet your needs. To give you an idea they're just 1ms away from my Manhattan office.

    ping 6sync.com

    Really good stuff.

I know it's a bit pricier, but the Ubiquity VPS Service might not be a bad choice? I've never used it, but for the price it should be a more premium service.

I would advise you to stay away from cheap, low -end, un managed boxes. Read the reviews first, there are a lot of providers out there looking for your business, so shop for good deals here in the "VPS Hosting Offers" section of Web Hosting Talk.

Hudson Valley Host has a "Basic" plan that fits you needs for $21. I've reviewed their service before and Ernie is a top notch guy in the sales department.

    Edit: Ernie is Owner/CEO.

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't find on Hudson Valley Host's site whether they're using KVM, Xen, or OpenVZ. Also, what are people's experiences with these? It seems like everyone suggests Xen because it's true virtualization vs. OpenVZ and KVM is not quite there yet in terms of performance.

openVZ performs just as well as Xen and KVM, it just depends who`s managing the server and how many VPS there putting on it.
