    BurstNet Speed

I'm thinking about getting a Windows VPS at BurstNet. What kind of internet speed should I expect? If I connected to speedtest.net from IE via RDC, what uplink and downlink numbers would it show?

IIRC it should be burstable up to 100mbit i.e. around 11MB /s but remeber this is burstable (up to) not dedicated so your sharing the link.

What should be and what actually is may be completely different. I'm looking for actual numbers from a BurstNet customer.

Indeed that is true however as an ex Burst.Net customer I can tell you that the servers are 100mbit and most of the time that is exactly what you will get.

Obviously this depends entirely on the source or destination.

Speedtest.net is a terrible way to measure speed. And backtogeek is right - You're sharing the uplink of the node your VPS is on so you're dealing with an unknown quantity as you don't know what the other VPSs on that node are doing at the same time as you.

I happened to be logged into one of our BurstNET VPSs so I ran the same cachefly test every few seconds for you....

    2011-09-01 03:48:05 (41.8 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]

    2011-09-01 03:49:27 (32.8 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]

    2011-09-01 03:50:08 (41.1 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]

    2011-09-01 03:50:57 (30.4 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]

    2011-09-01 03:51:40 (24.4 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]

    2011-09-01 03:53:14 (35.7 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]
You can see the variance within a few seconds. Having said that, those speeds are not at all shabby and suit me just fine!

Just wanted to mention 1gbps ports are on their Premium line, not regular unless there's an addon option for that.

Ummmmm, I ran those tests on a standard (not Premium) BurstNET VPS. I better hide before they ask me which node it's on

It seems to be dead on with my local cable connection, reporting 25 Mbps down, 3 up, exactly what Comcast tells me I'm getting.

That's one of the reasons for the test, how much speed can I expect knowing that other nodes would be sucking on my bandwidth. Obviously I'd need to test multiple times over a certain period to get a reliable average.

Speedtest is good for tiny stuff.

When you're exhausting half the speedtest node's capacity (and flash SUCKS HARD over rd/vnc), welp

That is not our network causing your speed issues.
We have one of the fastest networks in the UK, with everything 10G thru and thru.
