Finding for a reliable VPS host in Europe/USA

    Hi,

We are starting a small social network site(about 1000 visitors/day) based on Symfony2 and I am currently looking for a reliable VPS/dedicated host in Europe/USA.

    Requirements:
    Reasonable Price
    Reliable Company
    Good Up-time and Performance
Linux OS (No managed server is OK, I know some configuration on Linux)
Ram at least 500M, 1G or more is better

My budget is 20 - 30 dollar per month.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

Is that 1,000 unique visitors a day or 1,000 hits a day? I'm just curious as to how much bandwidth you use.

Having a free control panel would be better. But it doesn't matter if there isn't. In my opinon, just a button to restart, reinstallation the OS will be enough.

Yeah, about 1,000 unique visitors a day for the moment. As it is a social network site, I think maybe we can multiple it by 100, so 100, 000 hit per day. I didn't verify it, just a guess.

How much bandwidth do you think that it will use, in the case that uploading videos are not allowed, so the photos are the only killer of BW.

Is this site currently up? If so, do you have a control panel? If you do, your best bet is to check the panel. Bandwidth is really important, you don't want to find out you have $500 in bandwidth overages.

The site is still under developpement, so I do not have the actual statistic data.
Yeah, I can't agree more that traffic limit is very important, I've seen some tiny remarks under "Unlimited Traffic" like: The traffic is unlimited If you exceed *TB/month, the connection will be limited to 10 Mbps. Which is terrible.

I did a simple calculate by imaging that each click will upload a photo:
    1000 user/day * 30 day * 100 hit/user * 1M (size of a photo) = 3TB
So I think 3TB/month will be enough for the beginning.

Do you have any suggestions based on this consideration?
    thx

You should not have to much trouble finding a package that meets most of your requirements on http://96mmb.com or http://lowendbox.com

The concern as has been pointed out is the bandwidth so you need to find a provider that allows simple and easy upgrades and does not charge extra or suspend when you hit your limits e.g. limited to 10mbit once you hit your limits.

You may find depending on how well your site is written that you don't need anywhere near 3TB build compression in to images 1M is huge for images on a social networking site or you could offload your images and media content on to a CDN.

He doesn't have a tight budget, I would say he is in the premium range...

Well, besides for the for the fact that 10 Mbps is over 3TB of bandwidth a month (which he is looking for), a CDN would totally destroy his budget.

I like the idea of an image server and a content server.

You should be able to get a low-end box for that price, no problem. Check the Offers section here on Web Hosting Talk forums, do some research and go with a provider that has awesome customer service/Tech support.

Agreed but very few servers especially those with only 1000 hits p/day are going to even come close to using 10 mbit 100% of the time.

I suppose what I am getting at is that 3TB is not a realistic expectation or estimation, better design and compression could reduce that by magnitudes of 80%+

The budget is not premium. At best, it's low managed from a few budget managed providers (Futurehosting), or decent for unmanaged. Either way, for Europe, I suggest taking a look at the unmanaged plans at EcoVPS.com, or the managed plans from EuroVPS.com. Stablehost and Futurehosting are a pair of others to look at.

You could try 6sync.com who is just about 80ms or so outside of Europe, with servers near NYC. Have used them for over 6 months and very happy with uptime/performance.
