some questions about VPSs
hi
i am looking for a good VPS company
but there is two points
first :
security
does security for VPSs and servers needs continues care or just some configurations and optimization and that is all
i am asking this cause some vps providers offer semi-manged vps or no management at all and i dont have enough experience in that field .
and if i took a managed vps from just like wiredtree.com or servint.net
should that solve the issue of security to me.
second:
flood protection
also a good DDos protection
a friend of mine told me that to have a good flood protection i should have dedicated server .. how is that true
so please i need your advice

Well normally what you need to do is a one time security hardening(ssh, root, csf etc). On a continuous basis, you just need to make sure that you're running the latest software versions & patches. That should have you covered.
For dos protection, you can install a software firewall like csf but that will provide only a certain amount of protection. For real protection from ddos and dos attacks, you wouldn't need a hardware firewall which AFAIK, isn't possible with a vps, you need a dedicated server for that.

Well it depends really. If its managed, then yes, they could setup your hardening for you. Unmanaged providers generally don't explicitly do this for you but its pretty simple once you get a hang of it. Besides, once you know your way around things, the extra $ you're paying for managed support won't be worth it.
I use gigenetcloud.com for almost all my clients. They're fantastic. Excellent hardware & network. They're unmanaged but have a reputation of being extremely helpful.
When I started out with vps hosting, I didn't know much and while I'm still new to it, everything I've learnt is from Gigenet's support, wht & google.
Let me know if you need anything else

Any managed VPS provider will secure, optimize, and harden your VPS for you. There are DDoS protected VPS out there, but they are very expensive. Is DDoS protection necessary or just something you would like to have? If it's not necessary, I do not recommend it.

unfortunately i had a very bad experience with flood once that i don't want to see again
it is over now however...
if it is too expensive i might take the risk and search only for good managed vps or server with good security until i learn how to secure it my self

If you can tell us what kind of money you are willing to spend, that would be helpful .As far as VPS security is concerned, better providers provide secured firewalls, and ordering "Managed" services is also advantageous.Good luck with your search!

Yes well vps & cloud vps are similar in most ways except that clouds have an inherent redundancy and instant scalability. However, a lot of providers just market vps' as clouds so be careful about who you go with. So yes, both would have only software firewalls.
For a budget of 50$ I don't think you will get what you're looking for in terms of ddos protection but what you can do is get a true cloud from a reputed provider like gigenet and use it with cloudflare. I believe they provide a certain level of mitigation.

Also, I saw a thread here about unixy.net. They apparently have a fully managed solution with 3rd party software support. Never used them but you can look around for reviews. They will do everything for you in terms of hardening I'm guessing.

The new increased sizes at Wiredtree meet your requirements and budget. I just signed up with them. You can see their latest offer in the VPS offers section. Helpful support staff since I'm used to shared hosting and just moving to VPS and I've had a few questions.

1. You definitely need full management, no question.
2. Why are you so concerned with DDOS protection? When you bring this up to a host it can be a red flag because they may think you are doing something shady. Are you just paranoid? What exactly are you going to be doing with the VPS?

thank you all .. i really appreciate your helping
dear SeoClown ..
it has nothing to do with being paranoid..
but as i explained it happened to me once
and that made me loose many customers then i turned to reseller hosting
now as i am willing to get vps again of course that will be on top of interest .
Ps : i still dont know what the reason attacks happened in the first place.
concerning security ..
mmm i think that is what i have been always paranoiac about
however i mad some searches here about sites you all provided me
and for now i think i will try known host and see ...

Knownhost does seem to be a good fully managed option for your budget.
Good luck
