Possible to load OS installation ISO if I only have access to VMWare ESXi client?
Hello,
I am just wondering if it would be possible for me to load an OS installation DVD image from my own PC if I only have access to VMWare ESXi client. It has been 10 days since I have requested my provider to load the image in without any response (and the ticket has been closed 5 times at least). However they are cheap and the VPS itself is pretty stable, so I am too lazy to keep bugging them and was wondering if there is any option I can take myself to get the OS installed.
Thanks!█96MB.com

Sounds like its going to be an awesome review haha!
It is possible but the catch being is your provider has to enable access for you to do that (its not just a ticky box) and if they don't know what there doing (sounds like it) ESXi delegation of rights on a granular level with shared media datastores will go straight over the top of their heads.
Do you have control over your standard VM setting while the VM is powered down, if so can you see the virtual CD-Rom device?
Last time I did anything serious with ESX was a while ago to be fair but we just set up a PXE server with a custom image n it that pulled the OS of choice down and gave users (lab environment) the ability to PXE boot the VM's█ -> INCEPTION HOSTING LIMITED Since 2010!

Yes -- if you have access to the ESXi client (vsphere) and you have been granted access to map CD drives into the VM. Open the console, edit the VM settings, go to advanced > bios options and tick the box for force into bios screen on next boot. Then mount the iso image from your desktop and restart the VPS. Should boot from the CD this time.
Does your provider not have templates or are you looking for a non-standard distro?

Nah, I know those guys have offered cr@p service and they have a bad name everywhere, the only reason why I signed up with them anyways is:
1. I am cheap and poor
2. I really can't convince myself to spend more than what I am paying right now on a Windows VPS when I am using it for less than 20 minutes a day on average, if I do use it at all.
Thanks for the reply!

Hi,
I've got a hosted VMWare VPS and had a similar issue. (I wanted to install FreeBSD, but they didn't have the ISO available.) I found that once you start the VM, in the vSphere window there's an icon (on the far right of the toolbar for me) that looks like a CD with a spanner over it. When I click that a menu pops up that includes options for:
- Connect to D:
- Connect to ISO image on local disk...
Do you have this icon on the toolbar? (You may have to start the VPS before it appears though.)

You can either mount the iso image from your local machine or upload the iso to your datastorage area in vshpere. Check out section "Installing the OS" in the following link ,

Here are all the settings that I can see from my client end at the moment, I do not think either KewiDave or manhalab's suggestion would work:
