FTP question
How do I restrict people to there own directories using vsftpd, so that they can only access there directory. Also, how do I make ftp the group for say /home/downloads ?

You need option chroot_local_user=YES in your vsftpd.conf and restart vsftpd.
And you need group of user with homedir /home/downloads. For /home/downloads you need allow group write permissions.
