Missing VMs after rebooting the host

    Hi everyone,

Today we changed our server's main IP address and then rebooted the host. Once back on, I can't see any VMs on the host. and also I get a notice:

Configuration Issues: The virtual machine inventory file on host {hostname} is damaged or unreadable.

    we use: ESXi 4.1
There are no VMs listed under vsphere client.
    can anyone help?
    thanks

    Hi

Do you have a support contract with vmware ? if so your first port of call would be to them.

Also when you rebooted ESXi was it a forced reboot ? and was it in maintenance mode when you booted it ?

Just did a quick google for "recreate vmware inventory" and there seem to be a few hits for it.

    Thanks

I dont have any support contract.

It was a regular reboot from consule.

If this has customers on it why not just pay up a support company from here and get it done right now... Stop wasting your time.

Are the VM's still present in your data store, if so the long way round (depending how many VM's you have there) would simply be to re import them using the .vmx (from memory cant remember the file extension)

What's the currently loaded kernel? Maybe you booted into the wrong kernel without realizing it?

Edit: I'm not a VMWare user, so this is may or may not be useful advice. I just know that I've done that before in VZ and Xen, and it leaves you scratching your head for a few minutes the first time it happens to you.

I imported the VMX from the datastore and it solved the problem.

    Thanks everyone
