www.futurequest.com is reliable but their 25MB plan has "only" 5GB transfer.

Other worth checking is http://www.tera-byte.com/ 99$/year 99MB 20GB

I think they do also run spaceports.com (offers free webspace)

I've heard bad things about can-host and otherone is not familiar to me

Hello...
Can I know what bad you heard about us?

We always try as much as possible to hear what everyone has to say about web hosting or specifically us to correct what is wrong.

There was a thread on us earlier (1 month ago or so) and the outcome made us change some details on our hosting plans. We are always ready to discuss any problems or issues you wish to talk about.

Our company offers Non-Profit discounts. For What you have mentioned, we can give you all of that for $20.00 per month. If you don't need that much bandwidth, we can probably do better. Our non-profit site is still in the works, but feel free to e-mail me for more information.

I think it's being a bit unfair to say you have heard bad things about a company, only to say you can't be specific. In most cases domain companies arn't here to defend themselves, and a comment like that could cause a reputable company to be tainted with a bad rep..

Cool

I'm surprised not more companies distingish between non-profit making accounts and company accounts, because people who can resell pop3s, webspace etc can make a hell of a lot of money, and really should be paying more in turn. ?

kyber,

pmarsh is wrong, but only by degree. It is extremely unfair to make comments like you did (about can-host.com )that are unsubstantiated. Nevermind that they are legally actionable, as you are defaming the character of a business and you can't support it with the truth, it is highly unethical and immoral.

Imagine if someone said they heard you were a child molester or crook, but couldn't recall the specifics. You would be justifiably upset at someone spreading unfounded rumors that could adversely affect your reputation. That's exactly what you are doing.

Forums like this are helpful when we share our experiences with each other about hosting companies, both good (the few) and bad (the many), and an essential ingredient to make them useful is the truth, not gossip, rumors or imaginings.

You're welcome. Some people need to be reminded that there can be consequences to squerolous statements, both to themselves as well as others. It goes beyond what is legal to what is right.

Spreading rumors like that hurts the reputation of the person spreading them also. They will be perceived as unreliable, a gossip monger, whose statements are not to be trusted.

A good rule for all of us to follow is, if we haven't experienced it, can't prove it, can't point to a reference about it, then don't say it.

Many of us (too many) have had bad experiences with one or more hosting companies. I know that in any review, I want to know specifics, both about the reviewer, their experience and background, their expectations, and exactly what their problems were with the company or service being reviewed.

When I posted the details of my unpleasant relationship with AIT (aitcom.net) I posted the entire messages between their customer disservice manager, lack of support department, and myself, totally unedited (I even left in the original typos). That way, no one would have to take my word for it (other that the messages were authentic) and could judge for themselves how poor the service was. One respondent here even commented on the poor attitude of their customer disservice manager being the one thing above all else that put them out of consideration for him.

Fairness is something more of us should strive for. While the primary purpose of many of us (as customers) is to find a reliable host, and for some companies to find customers, one of the ancilliary benefits is that we can help improve some hosting companies (those with a receptive attitude), and possibly shape part of the industry.

Can-host.com is a perfect example of that. A month or so ago, I was one of those critical of their web site and the impression it gave of them. They were only about four months old at the time and made a mistake. They copied the same buzz words and terminology misused by so many others, including a great many companies that are not to be trusted.

They learned from that mistake and corrected their web site to be accurate in reflecting the services they provide. They are to be commended for that, not criticized for past mistakes.

I'm glad to see companies like them, Frank Rietta's atlantawebhost.com, and others, that are honest in their offerings and make no attempt to deceive customers. It is important that we tell the truth about any company as it aids us all in slecting a reputable host. Better ones will follow suit and abandon lies (marketing terms) used by mistake while the ones to avoid will continue to make it easy for the learned customer by continuing to promise what they can't deliver.

Many of us already know to avoid promises of unlimited bandwidth, paying a one time fee for a lifetime of hosting, paying a whole year in advance or committing to a year for a shared server, and similar signs of companies out to part us from our money without honoring their contractual obligations and ethical comittments.

The truth separates the trustworthy and the not among hosting companies. The same is true of thos eof us who comment about them.
