    Monitoring would help in this instance (our transit provider at the Manchester facility which houses our VPS cluster, status blog and a few dedicated servers is having network issues which is causing packetloss on some routes).

    Could be network or hardware related or both. Best way would be to ask your provider first.

    If you can't see anything in your logs then you'll need to contact your VPS provider and ask them why your VM was down.

    I think the first thing to do is to check the system uptime. If the VPS was not rebooted then chances are it was a network issue -- local (switches, routers) or a glitch somewhere between the facility and some end users (assuming multihoming). If you have monitoring stations in diverse carriers these abnormal network conditions may be detected.
    You will only find out how good a provider is when the going gets tough

    Well if its a Fully Managed VPS then its your provider who should check out the issue with the VPS and if its being monitored then your provider is responsible , So better solution is to check with your hosting provider itself.

    You can check in the OS logs to see if it was an OS level problem but if not you need to have the host check the virtualization software logs as the problem could of been at that/host level.

    As you should be able to see, The 2nd post by RackSrv solved my problem as they are my VPS provider. So this is solved.

    If you have more than one server I would suggest to use nagios as it can very deeply monitor your vps. We have installed it on the separate network which monitors anything on any of the machines.
    This includes:
    1. Disk space;
    2. MySQL quesries;
    3. Load on the server
    4. All services (httpd, names, dovecot, exim, cpanel);
    5. some other stuff;

    This will determinate exactly why your server went down. If it is from the provider side when you should receive the message that host is down if it is separate service you will receive a message with it.
    Finally, integrate clickatell which will send you text messages to your admins about services failed.
    You also can use free or paid solutions, but for own infrastructure I was always count on the servers that we have and we control.
    Anyway, this solution will show you exactly why your server was down instead calling to the provider.

    The 2nd post referred that specific issue affecting some routes. If you were connected using an other route/carrier probably you would never know there was that downtime for some visitors.

    use monitoring service like pingdom and forward email that you get when vps down to your provider so you have proof and they cant lying.
    - do it your self.

    Ask your provider for an RFO regarding the downtime, any reputable provider will provide one.
