Question

How many small sites on Raq 550?

How many small sites can I host comfortably on a 256MB, 2x 40GB HD Raq 550. Is it very important to upgrade the memory to 512MB?

I use no special scripts!

It actually is difficult to quantify what 'small sites' are and how much bandwidth or CPU utilization each would consume. But if it is just pure HTML without any database or scripting and assuming they are rather low-impact then probably you could look at between 200 to 300 sites.

But in the end, it all depends..

After you add your 50th site, check the CPU utilization and memory swap loads. Then each couple of sites you use, you check on those.

On a Raq550, you should be able to host anywhere between 300-500 "small" sites as you describe, with "no special scripts"

I have customers using a similiar machine (Difference is our machine includes 1gb of RAM) and I know them to be hosting 425+ smaller non-interactive virtual sites on the Raq550.

Yes, it is important to UPGRADE the memory. 512mb is the minimum I would recommend, but I suggest 1gb myself. The amount of RAM you have in the Raq550 will affect it's performance. The more you have....The better it runs...Especially with more then 200 virtual sites

Hi,
this is the information on my RAQ550, currently containing 73 sites (most of them "small"):
System memory is being slightly used
Total physical memory: 255508 KB
Free physical memory: 7032 KB
Memory Usage: 248476 KB (97 % of total)
Total Swap Space: 524536 KB
Free Swap Space: 503816 KB
Pages Per Second: 9 pages per second
Swaps Per Second: 0 swaps per second
Swap Usage: 20720 KB (4 % of total)

The CPU is being slightly used
1 Minute Load Average 0.07
15 Minute Load Average 0.02
System Uptime 25 Days, 16 Hours, 30 Minutes
CPU Temperature 49 °C

What can I exactly learn from the information above?

That your server can easily handle the sites that it has...

If your load average is well below 1.00, the server isn't even breaking a sweat (thus the "CPU is being slightly used" message).

The Load Average shows how many processes are waiting for CPU time at any given moment. Think of 1.0 load as 100% CPU utilization. Over 1.0 is ok, but means that some processes will be slowed down. (Way over 1.0, like 15+, means the box is getting hammered, and you ought to think about moving something off it to another server.)

The CPU Temperature is a little on the warm side for those Load Averages. Maybe a warm datacenter? OR a faulty Fan #1

We find that the Raq550's temperature hover between 38-42 degrees, So your 49 while not under a load merit's a peek IMHO.

I don't know Jeff - all of my customers who have 550's are hanging right around the 48C mark, and our DC stays a nice 72F year round. For comparison, an average RaQ4 in our DC is right at 33-35C. So I'd say his temp is probably OK.

You guys must be hosting out of an icebox.

(Hope you're doing well!)

Brandon

My 550 (sitting on a shelf in my non-AC office) is running at about 44-45. Ambient air temp in here is about 68-70F.

Hi, a few months ago the RAQ550 always send me warnings that the system temperature was about 52 to 55 degrees.
After contacting the datacenter it lowered to 47 to 49 degrees.
Should I be worried with such a temperature?
