I want to build a server

Hello,

I would like to build my first server, I have built PCs before but this is be a different experience from what I have heard so someone will help me, but I am not sure what parts to get... My budget is around $15,000 for these specs. I don't think it will be close to that but you never know.

384GB DDR3 RAM+
20TB Sata II +
Intel Xeon 8+ Core
10GBIT Network Card

Those are just basic specs, I would like it to be a rack mount server I don't care whether its 1U or 4U. If anyone could put together a list of what I would need to build a server. I would also need to colocate so if someone would give me some good providers for colocating in Miami, Florida that would be great. I need quite a bit of banwidth.

I know this may not be much to run on but this is all I could think of at the moment.

Thanks in advance

-Lukla

I dunno of any mother boards right off the top of my head that supports that much mem.
You can look at the super micro X8DTN+-F it supports up to 288GB if that would work. http://www.supermicro.com/products/m...TN_.cfm?IPMI=Y

Thanks for the response but I will need more than 288GB of memory. I'm just looking for something under $15,000 USD.

What exactly are you trying to build this monster for?

I don't think you will be able to stay under the 15,000 budget if you include the spare parts to go with it but, if I remember correctly, siliconmechanics.com is a good company to use. They may be able to get a custom solution to match your needs. Rackmountsetc would be a good contact also, or, apaqdigital. Contact all of them, find the best quote possible including spare parts. You could order all the parts separately from these company's and build it yourself while getting assistance that you would otherwise not get ordering from different areas when issues arise.

I am not sure the price of this monster http://www.supermicro.com/products/s...-5086B-TRF.cfm but it should be able to fit everything you need. It may not be the best chassis but it's the only one off the top of my head that even holds the amount of ram you needed unless I read the specifications wrong.

hello,

I'd suggest asking Dell or IBM for an invididual quote on that. Though our own Intel based machines don't have more than 256GB of memory.

For larger machines, we use IMBs power 7 series, but you won't get anything for 15k in that segment, I'm afraid.

cheers -
oz.

Ok well can you get this for $20,000? I want to stay under my maximum spending price which is $25,000 but if needed I can use that... I am looking to get 3-4 of these machines. They will be hosting some mission critical data.

Thanks

I will contact them for a custom plan I think I may be able to stay under $25,000.

Thanks for all the help!

For $25,000 you might be able to get what you are looking for. I would suggest looking into contacting dell, Rackmountsetc for custom quotes.

Dude 384GB ram is useless. Why do you need such kind of huge ram? Your HDD's and processor will be the bottleneck on this kind of config!

Processors and applications arent designed to scale that kind of RAM on single server. My advice is get 5 servers with 24GB RAM each and good processors + SAS Disks! And run a clustered setup!

I'd prefer if you didn't ask why I needed this, I would like some suggestions. We planning to getting 3-4 of those machines maximum. I have already figured out I have $25,000 for each machine and $16,000 monthly for the space. Also just to add for the colocating space I need 1GBIT Unmtered Loseless, or 10GBIT Unmetered Loseless if possible and within my budget.

Thanks

-Lukla

I think for that kind of RAM you'll need SSDs or something.

Look into the Dell R910. It can do up to 2TB RAM.
