Trying to make a Fixed Website template

Hello WHT Community,

So I'm trying to make a fixed style template for my site and so far it's not turning out so great. right now i've been designing by 1600px by 1200px. Is that a fluid template demension? What dimensions would be a fixed template in photoshop?

Everyone has a different view on dimensions. In my case I like to design the content area around 1000px wide and make it centered so no matter the screen size it will always look presentable. Behind this content I use some type of background that will stretch to the whole screen size. The easiest method is to use a simple background style such as a gradient (1px wide for lowest file size) and use repeat-x in the CSS.

1600px sounds very wide if you plan on using all of that area for the content. However, you could keep the document that size and design in the middle.

I prefer something less than or around 1000px. Don't forget your audience probably don't all have 22"+ widescreen monitors. Pretty safe to design for a 1024 width. I personally almost always use 950 centered.

If you're defining the exact width and height, that's not fluid, it's fixed. 1024 x 768 is fairly average these days, if going for fixed. Design it to grow in height as needed, naturally.

More people are using tablets these days, so keep that in mind. iPad resolution is 1024x768.
