HostGator - 1% of global traffic

I read a news article on HostGator that claimed HostGator accounted for 1% of all internet traffic.

Is this really true?

Now that is a lot of traffic and people.. HostGator is a very big company that most users in this industry run to and most new web site makers come to for hosting and services. I remember when i first made my first web site and the first thing i do was ran to host gator buy hosting and learn the industry and improve skills. I learned a lot from them and they helped me with a lot in diffrent ways.

Just seems like a lot of traffic - There are a lot of providers out there yet HostGator make up 1% of traffic. Interesting..

Yes - This is what makes me wonder. One shared host can claim 1% - Data centres would use more - All adding up to above 100% :/

We'll never know, because it can't be measured, only estimated.

Quick google search gave this link http://www.hostgator.com/company.shtml

"The over five million domains hosted by HostGator make up approximately 1% of the world's Internet traffic"

They really cannot say that based on blind estimates with bandwidth.

Thanks. I browsed their blog, but couldn't find anything related.

Its probably just a guesstimate on thier part, but they do host a pretty large amount of domain names, roughly around 1.7 million domain names are pointing to the Hostgator nameservers (not sure how many of those are parked though).

This is pretty hard to believe. Although I do love Hostgator, There support is amazing.. over 100 support representatives now days on live chat. I'm not with them any more but I still use there support sometimes if I have questions about my server lol.

I've done the same before - Asking about things not related to my HG service.

Some days I see 230 chat technicians available on live chat now.

They're not just a "shared host". They haven't been one for quite a while now.

Either way, do you think 1% of total internet traffic is accurate? It sounds like a guess to me.
