Where would be the best place to find a dedicated server in the US?
If i'm looking to go into the hosting biz. Any ideas?
It doesn't have to be hosted in an SAS70 type 2 datacenter.

Simple answer...
Dedicated server providers usually will advertise in the Advertisement Section. Perhaps you could check there. It would give you a general idea of who is doing what and etc. Find a suitable host and talk to them about you starting a business and etc. Most hosts will have a requirement before you get a special discount from them. So just talk to them and you'll get a bigger idea.

It depends what kind of requirements you have. You say you're going into the hosting biz. What market are you targeting? Are you looking to resell? If so, reselling shared, vps, or dedicated hosting?
Looking to offer hosting? If so, are you looking to sell shared hosting, vps, dedicated, or colocation? If shared, are you looking to host your shared clients on a vps, dedicated server, or colocated server? If vps, are you looking to provide those from a dedicated or colocated server?
The answer to what market you're after will help narrow this down. For example, if you want to offer shared hosting, and you want to rent a dedicated server to do this, you'll want to be with a host that is flexible with regards to abuse, as you could have 100 customers on one server and you don't want the whole thing being taken down by one abuse complaint.
If you're offering VPS hosting, similar issues to shared but you also need a host who can offer enough ip addresses, as you'll need at least one ip per VPS, and you'll probably have a couple dozen VPS's on one dedicated server.
And so on.

I was looking at shared hosting on a dedicated box. My goal was to start with Minecraft servers and VPS.
You said I would need a flexible host regarding abuse. Any hosts in mind?

If you're offering minecraft VPS servers, that's not quite what I'd think of when I say shared hosting... were you looking to offer both shared hosting and minecraft / vps servers?
Minecraft doesn't usually get abuse, though sometimes people will get DDoS'ed if they make others angry / ban the wrong people. If you're sticking with just minecraft, then mostly you'd be looking for a decent cpu, lots of ram, 1 ip per customer, and a low price, as those factors seem to be the most important for minecraft vps hosting. Also wouldn't hurt to be working with a provider that has experience managing VPS's, especially if it would be your first time offering that kind of thing. So those are the kinds of things I would look for there.

As per forum rules, I can only recommend providers I have had direct experience with and who I don't have a business relationship with. I'm not usually in the market for this kind of server as I colocate my own servers, so I don't have direct experience with other hosts who would fit this usage pattern. Therefore, as per forum rules, I can't specifically recommend anyone for this.

If your clients may be located in the U.S. and Western Europe (UK, Germ, France, Spain, etc) then EAST coast in the US is your best option to service everyone
If your clients may be located in the U.S. and from Australia, Asia, Rusia, etc - then west coast is a good option for your hosting location.
If you just plan to have clients in the U.S., then anywhere U.S. will do just fine.
Since you want to do both VPS and shared hosting, you could do get a 'reseller' shared account, that lets you sell shared hosting in your brand without the expense of a dedicated server. See the 'reseller hosting' offers section here on WHT for providers/offers on that. And for VPS reselling - that's a bit more complex, unless you have some administrative skills to manage the server yourself. But you can order just about any dedicated server pre-loaded with Vmware, Citrix Xen Server, or even the latest SolusVM (requires multiple dedicated servers though) to sell VPS's.
If your goal is minecraft hosting (vps), be prepared for a LOT of DDoS and abuse issues, and make sure any provider you work with is willing to accept that (very few will tolerate the type of abuse that some of those online games generate due to one kid angry at another and causing a DDoS war).

You are going to need a nice chunk of ram to run the minecradft servers. What I would recommend is contacting a few hosts directly, tell them what your plan is, what your budget is, what your specs are, etc... You will want to be upfront with them to prevent issues down the road. Plus the contact via email or a contact form on their site will allow you to judge their response and response time. You are most likely going to need some help from them along the way and it will be nice to know they answer, answer with helpful info and dont take 3 days...
