It is not a marketing scheme. Green hosting providers offer web hosting that is less taxing on the environment. There are many ways a provider can go green -- some choose Renewable Energy Credits, some choose to utilize a green data center, some do both.

There is one host that I know of that owns and operates their own completely solar powered data center. They're called AISO.Net. Never used their services, but you should check them out.

I agree -- they do own and operate their own data center, but I am not sure about their connectivity.
