False server load?

I'm evaluating a server performance by using "top" command.
I can see there are 2 program in the processing area consume 100% of the CPU for more than 15 minutes but the server load is still 2.xx. Is that possible? or the server load been "modified"?

press "i" t remove idle processes.

But yeah that looks odd.
I can never figure out exactly what top is telling me.

I would however look into why PHP is sitting there with 100% as that cant be good no matter what.

Thanks lynxus for your reply.

i can see 3 php running and each of them used 99% of CPU but the server load is just 3.xx. is that possible?
The server is Intel Xeon L5630 2.13Ghz.

They have been running for a long time..
Id either run the php script manually ( to see the output ) or start going over your scripts and logs to find what it is thats hanging the scripts.

i "think" that as you have a xeon ( 4core? ) i would assume you dont want the load to go over 4.0 ( 400% )

if you press the "1" key you should see the cpu usage for all cores..

Yes, is possible, if is a dual 5630, you have 16 cores, why the load would be over that if you still have 14 cores free? or even if is a single 5630, you still have 6 cores free.
