are those purely for normal email use or can i use them as an authenticated smtp relay for a forum (transactional messages only like pw resets - no newsletters, no "blasts", no spam or crap)

You can, but we really prefer you don't, as:

1, That's usually a truly horrible idea, because I haven't seen a forum software yet that either handles SMTP correctly nor logs the connections meaningfully, so any kind of error, network or otherwise (like a mis-typed address), is going to basically cause messages to disappear into the aether without a trace,

and

2, if you don't have an effective CAPTCHA/similar to prevent spambots from signing up to your forum, you'll be generating an endless flood of e-mail to random bogus gmail/hotmail/yahoo addresses, which will get your other, legitimate, email traffic flagged as spam, get our IP blacklisted, and cause us to terminate your service, which is... undesirable for everyone, obviously.

That being said, we do provide SMTP-only service for several forums and a blog or two, on a couple of what are otherwise basically backup or monitoring servers.
