Xeon 6550

Has anyone started using this yet? Expensive yes but with eight physical cores, it looks like something that would come in handy on VPS nodes.

I would just go with more smaller nodes than an expensive beefy one.

Actually without knowing your specific product, and target market, then we can't really give out a decent suggestion..

It really depends on what you're trying to achieve.

You could look at the supermicro cloud 3U 8 Node servers, or just dual E/X 56 series for VPS servers.

The E3-1270 performs nicely as well, although not having a high density.

But I'm going to assume the target for going with the 6 series is for RAS, then maybe you should look at the E7 series instead.

Hope this helps.

That's ok. I wasn't asking for suggestions. Just wanted to know if anyone was using them.

I think such servers are better for non-clusterable systems, for example some databases or digit-crunchers or something else. Because otherwise the standard amount of servers for the same configuration (in terms of CPU unit, mobo price, RAM price and HDDs) would be cheaper and far more stable (you can even buy +1 hot or cold spare).
