Animals in Logos and Brands, Why?
While in the process of getting a new logo design for my company, I decided to take a look at some very popular and well known logos. I found it interesting that many, many products use animals for their brands. From web hosting (I don't even need to mention that here), to cars (Impala, Jaguar, Mustang), to computer hard drives ( http://www.storagesearch.com/animals-in-storage.html). Clothing uses animals (American Eagle, Lacoste (Alligator), POLO by Ralph Lauren (Horse)), John Deere, etc. It's extremely prevalent in American culture (and probably others).
PHP uses a dolphin, Perl uses a camel, Gateway uses a cow... I'm curious about this. Why animals? They seem to sell well, but certainly aren't a necessity to sell well either.

Most of the animals listed here have common attributes: aggressive, powerful, dominating, strong, top of their class, etc..
It's a psychological thing.

Sums up why we re-branded a few years go. Clearly Tony and myself are not digging into some deep psychological reasons for choosing an animal mascot (just like the gajillion of other hosts who also use animal mascots). It was merely a way to go from a name that isn't really personable (Devoted Host) to something people can easily remember and to help make your company memorable.
Unfortunately our designer for both the mascot and website had a field day and now it's not so unique...  .

Too many animal hosts, most of them need to be shot. Anything past HawkHost deserves a bullet.
