    Best network for O2/BeThere

    Hi,

Does anyone know which datacenter has the best network for connections to/from O2/BeThere home broadband? I'm looking for a dedicated server or a vps.

    Thanks!

I find that I get great speeds at RapidSwitch on my BE connections.

Great speeds doesn't really matter, I can max out my connection from Australia, I only have 250KB/s.

It's low latency that I'm looking for.

Here's a ping test for an IP of one of my servers at RapidSwitch. 30ms is really good and a server at another DC in Newcastle, UK gets an average of 60ms - 70ms.
Pinging 87.117.*.* with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 87.117.*.*: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=57
    Reply from 87.117.*.*: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=57
    Reply from 87.117.*.*: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=57
    Reply from 87.117.*.*: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=57

    Ping statistics for 87.117.*.*:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 30ms, Maximum = 30ms, Average = 30ms

I get 20ms from my computer (to rapidswitch.com) and 16ms from my router. Do you think this will be OK for VPN?

The majority of UK broadband is backhauled to London or Ealing, so your best location is London (especially as you're there too). I'm not sure where the 30ms and 60ms pings are from because it's only a 7ms ping from London to Manchester. Based on that, BurstNET Manchester would suit you better than Rapidswitch even though it's 150 miles further from you!

Tagadab, Goscomb and Xtrahost spring to mind, but try some test pings first (obviously)

I'm not sure if BurstNET is the best choice..

    Code:
    C:\Users\Admin>ping burstnet.eu

Pinging burstnet.eu [178.238.129.83] with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 178.238.129.83: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=58
    Reply from 178.238.129.83: bytes=32 time=230ms TTL=58
    Reply from 178.238.129.83: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=58
    Reply from 178.238.129.83: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=58

    Ping statistics for 178.238.129.83:

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
        Minimum = 26ms, Maximum = 230ms, Average = 83ms

    C:\Users\Admin>ping rapidswitch.com

Pinging rapidswitch.com [78.129.136.83] with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 78.129.136.83: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=123

I think tagadab is best, 19ms every time. No VPS though.

Where are you looking misspink (or should that be missping? )

    http://www.tagadab.com/uk/virtual-pr...ervers/VPS_500

I gave BurstNET as an example because I don't understand the 30 or 60ms pings to Rapidswitch. From xtrahost:

Pinging burstnet.eu [178.238.129.83] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 178.238.129.83: bytes=32 time=7ms TTL=53
    Reply from 178.238.129.83: bytes=32 time=8ms TTL=53

    Ping statistics for 178.238.129.83:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 7ms, Maximum = 8ms, Average = 7ms
    From Tagadab:

    --- burstnet.eu ping statistics ---
20 packets transmitted, 20 received, 0% packet loss, time 19027ms
    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 9.310/9.492/9.665/0.108 ms

Why are the tagadab VPS so expensive compared to, for example, burstnet?

Budget versus Premium, plus you could flip the question and ask why BurstNET are so cheap compared to London pricing

All 3 I mentioned are VERY well connected in London, Tagadab are connected via Claranet (who've been around for aaaages) Goscomb has it's own network with (amongst others) a couple of Telecity connections in London and a direct link to AMS-IX, and xtrahost are my personal favourite because they connect direct to Level(3) which I pick up in Manchester. I rate all 3 very highly, but it's down to your pings really.

Also ping 212.111.33.234 to see how my other favourite, LiNode, would suit you.

The main purpose is to use as a VPN to reduce my ping to other places, which one do you think would be best for that?

And also so I can download movies without letters from my isp.

Where are the "other places"? (Generally speaking)

Europe and some USA. I've got hooked on a game and would really like to have lower ping to some of the usa places.

All the ones I mentioned are fine for Europe (as would most London-based be) because you've got LINX, GBLX, etc, right on the doorstep.

Have you got any specific locations (or cities) in the USA in mind? I'll run a few tests and let you know in a bit.

I'm not sure, I think I'll go with Linode since I also get 19ms to there, and I already have an account with them.

Do you know how they are with torrenting?
