Here's the key things that a usual host will have...

    1. Control Panel
    2. Sales & Support System
    3. Billing System

Next up will be your offerings... Since you only have a VPS, I am guessing you're going to be only having Share Hosting Accounts or do you want to risk Resellers there as well?

As for Domains, you could easily get a Reseller Account (ENOM or ResellerClub) and you'll be good with it.

BTW, do you really know how to manage a VPS properly or are you relying on KnownHost to help you when you have trouble? Like for example when there's a high load and etc? Starting a Web Hosting company is not as simple as you think it might be.

I would consider "WHMCS" as the support system but that is entirely up to you, If you had the collateral you could invest in Kayako's Support Suite which is "SUPERB!" I must admit, and then move on from there.

You really need to have an understanding of what you want, are you committed into this industry at all?

if you're web designer or sell web services such as for building ecommerce website, seo service, etc. Since you only use vps, you can start selling your hosting as an additional feature for your current service.
what's you need to know is about cPanel/WHM, administering your client, handling support request, managing your server

Nice to hear that you are going to launch your own Hosting Company. Compare the services and prices offered by your competitors and offer a affordable services to your clients. I wish you all the best.

I would suggest you start with a reseller hosting first, you don't have to prepare too much by doing that. Once you got sufficient experience and budget you can purchase all needed equipment by yourself.

    As,
    1. A VPS is a lot better and more customisable than a reseller account and
    2. He already owns a VPS

I'd suggest him to go on with his decision and integrate good billing and support systems. A good looking website and reasonable price are also keys to success.

That's really one of your first steps that needs to be completed, creating a brand is VERY important (should probably be on the top of your list of things to do). Once you have that in place, then you can start formulating web hosting packages and setting up pricing.
