how to troubleshoot packet loss between two different providers

I host the web servers at one hosting company and the databases at the other company. They both are good.

I am seeing database connection errors so I ran "ping -t" for several hours. When I killed it - the summary says "3% packet loss".

Now how do I find out the cause? i.e. which company has a problem with their network?

Run an MTR from each machine to the other.

This will show how much loss is occurring at each hop. Keep in mind that some routers/machines deprioritize ICMP and may appear as 'loss' when it truly isn't. For there to truly be a loss, the P/L would need to carry throughout the rest of the route, not just one host.
