    Hetzner vs other providers

I'm considering starting up a small web hosting company and I'm trying to decide what dedicated server I want - and from where. I found Hetzner and they offer a nice i7 server with 8GB RAM for just 49 EUR a month (and 149 setup, but that's not important)! When looking at other providers, you can barely get a server for 49 EUR a month - maybe an Atom, but that's it. How can Hetzner offer the servers so cheap and what's the cons of Hetzner?

    Thanks,
    John

They target the high volume / budget market and mainly work with desktop systems.
Not many can compete with that, but I can say that most providers who are more expensive do offer better support than the budget hosts.

If you are just starting, Hetzner is more then good for you.
I can't remember when somebody complained about them.

There is many other providers, but if you are looking for European provider with good network and the best prices on the EU market, then it's Hetzner

I don't want to create a new topic for a short question so I might as well ask here: is it possible to run 16 VMs with 512MB RAM each on the 8GB RAM dedicated server from Hetzner or does the virtual machine software itself take up RAM? Also, what is the preferable virtualization software for me? (OpenVZ/Xen etc..)

That is small amount of RAM, mate.
It will work, but how and for how long, not sure.

Regarding OpenVZ/XEN, there is shared opinions... I suggest you to google a little bit about it.
We use OpenVZ... But I cannot say it's the best

Technically speaking, you can even create 20 or more VM's using the "shared" option however, you need to realize that by doing so, you are basically as the webhosting world calls it "OVERSELLING" and it might turn out to bite you back when too many people is on there and too much resources is used. That's kinda scary.

1 of the biggest reason why I don't really like overselling is because of this and if you have that happening, you have to either add more ram or move people around which basically kinda sucks... then again, it's on a budget, what choice do you have?

No, the host operating system needs some resource allocation, so you can't carve it up that way.

Also, with Hetzner each IP needs RIPE justification. If you need more than 5 IPs total, you have to pay 15Euro/mo for their Flexipack to be able to add blocks of IPs to the server.

    Hi there,

First off like you mentioned that you are starting a new company so you should realize the all sides about providing VPS servers from good hardware ,High I/o r/w ,good virtuallization Xen ,OpenVZ ..etc.

Basically I side with XEN instead of OPENVZ because OPENVZ VMS share the same kernel which means the resources will be shared on the same file system which means if one vm was exceeding its allocated resources it will cause the main node to overload and the other vms gets high load as well. Also when a high load occurs in one vm even when no resources being exceeded ,It will cause load to the other vms. Thats a drawback that you have to avoid with some plans a head. Xen means no shared resources each vm acts as if it was a dedicated server with stand alone kernel with its own file system and with good configuration you can actually make it even better than the real dedicated servers with the same specs but with lower costs.

Note that Hetzner is unmanaged company so you have to do every thing by your self.

    Hello,

Hetzner is too god with their rock solid network and uptime. But one thing I should mention is that they are unmanaged providers.

Yah u need to maintain everything yourself. I got a vServer from them and it is working fine. The only problem they made with me is that they installed german version of centos for me

It's not really going to make a difference with either OpenVZ or Xen because 2x750GB SATA drives in RAID1 and 16 VMs is going to leave a smoking crater where your server was. Xen won't be able to schedule IO any better than OpenVZ.

You'll probably be lucky to get 10 out of it, but your mileage may vary depending on your customers.

Well, You will need Flexi Pack for IPs anyway, Why not add 2 more Hard Drives and in Raid10, You can sell 256Mb ram VPS too and get good I/O.
