I've developed a web app for a client with a large MySQL database that is attacked with constant FULLTEXT lookups. We've tested it on various platforms, and using SSDs speeds up queries by a factor of at least three, sometimes going up to five.
OpenVZ I personally think is good for a host as you can oversell, but on a user point of view I wouldn't really recommend it. I think for a CPanel host now days using something like CloudLinux & CageFS is a must for security and performance which you can not use on OpenVZ.
