Need help finding a reliable web/email hosting site

We have a small family business which uses email on a daily basis to contact our clients. (we aren't big at all, we only get around 20-30 emails a day from clients). However, it is very important that we get the emails as well as send our replies asap.

We are now having problems with our web and email host (hostnexus) which was reliable before (we have been with them for 5yrs+) but recently, our clients cant send us emails because they are bouncing back and other times we cant send email ourselves.

In this regard, we need a very reliable host to host our domain and email account.

For your info, we only have 3 domains (2 of them being my personal domain). We receive from 10-20 important emails a day (some having attachments as big as 5MB - scanned documents).

So in short, can you help me find a very very reliable host for our simple requirement?

    - we dont need any database
    - we dont need any voip / forum / selling cart / paypal

    - we need a very stable host
    - we need the host to have a 24/7 chat support in case we need help
    - we need to be able to assign email to our different personnel like john@domain.com / lea@domain.com
    - we need a pop account so we can download our email to our computer (we use outlook express)
    - we also need to have a webmail access to our email in case we cant download our emails
    - we need to have an smtp to be able to send emails
    - we need to have a simple webpage (maybe max of 10 pages) - bandwidth is very light. (about 10 visitors a day)

    Our budget = max $10/month
our domain is hosted in godaddy and is being directed to hostnexus (i think this is how it is right now). I may want to transfer all hosting to this new site so i won't need to use godaddy and hostnexus. It would greatly help if this new site can transfer our domains and email for us. (our website only has 1 page and no database so i dont think that would be a problem). I just want the transfer to the new host FAST because I don't want our email to stop that long.

    Thanks

So much requirements for so small budget. I suggest you to check website reviews for cheap hosting companies, but do not expect high quality.

For the budget the OP has, I do not see this being a big issue.

If your major concern is email, I would recommend using a specialized email service rather than a web host, like Google Apps. Google Apps cost $5/ user per month and there are cheaper and free services available if you need. Web mail service from web hosts don't even come close, whether it is 100% uptime, great interface (you get pop3 if you want) or superior spam filtering. Spam filtering is the major reason why I love GA, fortunately I started using them when it was free for up to 50 people and it still is free for me.

    Hi jomsjoms,

I checked your requirements and I believe any cheap web hosting provider meets them. However the most important is to choose a provider with good customer support. I would recommend you to test your future provider by sending them several test tickets or join them on their online chat. You can verify this way how fast they will respond to any request.

Yes, but it is not stated how much emails will be send per hour. Most of the companies suspends their users for mass mailing...

Indeed, most hosting providers have limit for sending mails per hour. However I don't believe that "jomsjoms" will use local mail client( outlook express) to send out mass email.

Still this is good idea to check the Terms of Use for such mail limits.

I don't think the OP is planning to SPAM, they get 10-20 important emails per-day, so I don't think the normal 200 e-mail limits would apply to them - well they would but in their case to what's been noted they wouldn't need to send that many per-day.

Hi i cant type long since im mobile right now. Maybe we will be sending a max total of 100 emails a day (thats all of us in the office already).

Average email we will send to client is around 40-50 a day. All of our emails are also sent to the same email address (our clients). They dont change their emails so i dont think we will be flagged as spamming.

Compiz - is $10/month really a small budget for my simple requirement of a good uptime for our email needs and a 1page website plus 3domain hosting?I thought thats a decent budget considering tons of hosting sites selling accounts for half the price ($5/month) and offering tons of service. (Even giving unlimited bandwidth, space, unlimited domains, etc). Im only asking for a reliable email server, perhaps a 100MB space for our website and hosting for 3 domains. Our bandwidth requirement would also be very very small since we only get at most 1visit a day from our website. Most of our bandwidth will come from our email and only around 10% of our emails will have file attachments averaging 5MB.

We dont even need any database, no forum site, no chat program, no voip, no ftp, no other stuff. ( well ok i also require the host to have 24/7 chat so we can report problems asap since our email is important to our business but still, that isnt too much to ask for right?)

    Sparrow - it is www.hostnexus.com

How many email accounts do you need? Why not host your email with someone like Rackspace? Rackspace email: http://www.rackspace.com/email-hosting/webmail/

It's pretty cheap, just $2 per mailbox (but you need to get at least 5 mailboxes) and fairly reliable as well.

Oh we need quite a lot of email since i give out email aliases to our personnel. Like john@domain.com, mike@domain.com, etc. they then download it to their own desktop computer via outlook. In total we have around 30. Email accounts i think

By the way, we cant use any online email like rackspace or any cloud solutions since our internet is SLOW. We are based in the Philippines and internet here is very slow compared to USA/Europe/etc. Our office is only being served by a 5Mbps (but in reality around 2Mbps only) connection and that is considered good already here in the Philippines.

So what we do is we just download all our email to our desktop computers. It would be nice though to have a backup webmail of our email because there are times that our cleint calls us and tells us that they have sent us an email already with attached documents. We look for it in our desktop (outlook) but we dont see it. We then look for it in the webmail backup and sometimes it is there. We dont know why it didnt download to our outlook.

We only intend to have an email backup in our webmail for around a weeks time (so we dont really need a big space online)

Here's what I think you should look for: a host in the western half of the US for better speeds to Asia. Choose a host with "add on domains" available so you can host your other domains on the same account.

I like MDDHosting.com for their service and support. They are located in the mid-west, so the ping times to the Philippines should be acceptable. They do limit the number of outbound email per HOUR to something like 250 per hour, but you would be OK there. You can have several "add on domains" with them, so you only need one shared hosting account for hosting your business and two personal accounts. You get 5 GB of storage so you could configure your mailboxes with a generous amount of space, and periodically purge them.

Your requirements are not much. You can easily get all this in $10 budget and yes, there are big companies like hostgator etc who provide 24x7 support. You might be interested in eleven2, I had a good experience with them.

MDDHosting seems to be nice and their pricing is perfect. The only thing I wish is for them to have a 24/7 online chat.

Eleven2 is also ok but their prices are a bit too low for what they are offering. I dont want it to be too cheap as there might be a lot of úsers availing it and our resources would be spread too thin. They do have a chat and ive tested it. Our chat disconnected midway and its been 2mins now without any operator from the other side. Im still waiting.... Also, there is a bad review of eleven2 right here in the forum site.

I think I wont need more than 5GB hard drive space and not more than 100GB transfer a month. I actually want restrictions so as to filter users that avail the sites to those that are serious users only.

hostgator - getting a lot of complaints lately
liquidweb - seems nice but its $14/month (out of the budget)
mediatemple - also nice but its $20/month (out of the budget)

For added info, i just checked my usage in hostnexus.com:

Hard drive space used = 1.7GB (1GB from office 0.7GB for my personal files)
Bandwidth used - for the last 18 months range from 5GB to 8GB traffic per month.
    Mailbox used - 20

So yeah, I guess we are not a heavy user at all compared to others. I'm not after space/bandwidth then but rather i'm more interested with reliability.

Is there a way to edit my last post after a certain time? The edit button disappears and I hate to keep posting on my thread because it may seem that i'm spamming.

Anyway we have decided to increase our budget to $20/month.

In this regard, which would you choose, liquidweb or mediatemple or something else? mediatemple gave me a 15% discount a month so their basic packaged comes to $17/month. I haven't asked liquidweb yet if they will offer me any discount. Anyway, which is more reliable between the 2 hosting sites mentioned above? My main concern is reliability and uptime.

    Thanks

I have been reading and checking both mediatemple and liquidweb. I think I need to scratch of mediatemple now since their online chat is offline for the past 2 hours+. I think their online chat is not 24/7. Only their ticket/email is 24/7.

For liquidweb, it seems their online chat is good and so far they have been up all the time. The problem is, in one of the threads here in webhostingtalk, someone said that liquidweb is only good for VPS or dedicated server. However, for shared hosting, they arent good at all.

This is the post of azimpact last 6/26/2013:

"Save yourself a headache and DO NOT MOVE TO LIQUIDWEB for shared hosting.

They are great for a VPS or dedicated, however every client I have placed on their shared accounts have had issues with server performance to the point of me having to move them somewhere else.

Godaddy is better for shared hosting than Liquidweb.

I have 3 VPS with them and have been a client for over 5 years now. No problem with VPS or dedicated, but their shared hosting sucks."

Now i don't know where to go again ! =P

C'mon, I have $20/month budget for such a simple demand. Where should I get hosted?

Please consider the following (I use all the services mentioned below):

Fastmail.fm - fantastic assortment of features, specialized email hosting.
Dot.al - perhaps their mail services will fit your budget better
HostOnARope.com - basicaly, they use a subset of standard CPanel hosting to provide email services
AltusHost.com - I use their CPanel shared plan for email needs only. Note they have chat support and I managed to elarn everything through chat with sales person.

    Good luck.

I believe it is a matter of prioritising the requirements. It seems to be that affordability is the most highest concern here.

With $20/month, most likely, only shared hosting services would meet this kind of budget. Specialise email services (RackSpace Email, Google Apps Email, Office 365 Email) would charge per email account, which could blow the budget. For greatest reliability, I would recommend taking up a specialised email provider.

Nevertheless, I would recommend BigScoots which world easily meet your budget. They have been provider fantastic support to us, and we would not hesitate to give them the recommendation. Do speak to them on how they can meet your requirements.

    Hi master bo,

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked them all but I try to shy away from hosts that sells unlimited packages for less than $8/month. In general, i perceive these types of hosts to focus on quantity rather than quality. I don't want our domain included with thousands of domains competing for the attention of the support team. I'm pretty sure that their support personnel will be swamped all day long from problems encountered from hundreds and thousands of users.

This is why I decided to increase our budget from $10/month to $20/month. I'd rather stay with a host that has more time for their few customers.

I understand my budget is only for shared hosting and not enough for VPS but surely I don't need a VPS with only the following: 1 website with 1 page having an average of 1 unique visitor a day. Most of our bandwidth / space comes from our email with our clients. With this, we only consume 1GB of hard drive space which contains mostly our emails for the past 18 months+? (we never purge our email). Moreso, our traffic is only 8GB / month.

jweebsol - if i take up a specialized email provider, we wont have a website up right? we still need that 1 page website for our clients in case they visit it.

    Thanks

You would need to have both a email hosting and a web hosting account.
