i7 better than Xeon, PassMark accuracy!

    Hi there,
PassMark site report that i7-2600@3.4G is around faster than most modern Xeons, including Nehalem based X5550@2.67 (i7-2600 is almost 80% faster than X5550).

i7 is sold for $290 while X5550 is sold for $980.

My question, how accurate is PassMark?

    Reports here:

the i7-2600 is the new sandy bridge type xeon, which should be cleaning the floor with any of the older models. To compare to Xeon, you'll want to compare it to the E3-1270, which is the same clock speed and chip architecture

The important thing is the architecture, not their name (Core or Xeon).

Yea we have been testing the E3-1230s and they are impressive! Less power and faster = win

We have several E3 1270 and we are very impressed, We have planned to replace all existing Xeons with E3s.

Sandy Bridge is indeed faster clock for clock than Nehalem and Westmere based Intel processors if you read the reviews online And well the added clock speed further widens the performance increase

Sandy Bridge AES/Encryption/Decryption performance is even more amazing!

For now only limitation is single cpu socket and max 32GB memory on Sandy Bridge.

Wait till Sandy Bridge-E socket 2011 arrives

    Thanks guys,
It's good to know that architecture is more important than CPU model & price. So, let me summarize two CPUs:

    i7-2600 (Sandybridge) - 4 Cores - 3.4Ghz - 8MB L3 Cache - DMI 2.0 - 95W - Dual Channel DDR3-1333 - PassMark 8880 - $299 (newegg)
    performance/$=29.6

    Xeon E3-1270 (Sandybridge) - 4 Cores - 3.4Ghz - 8MB L3 Cache - DMI 2.0 - 80 W - Dual Channel DDR3-1333 - PassMark 9142 - $339 (newegg)
    performance/$=27.7

    And one loser :
    Xeon X5550 (Nehalem) - 4 Cores - 2.67Ghz - 8MB L3 Cache - QPI 6.4GTs - 95W - DDR3-1333 - PassMark 5239 - $979 (newegg)
    performance/$=5.34!!

No idea why one would buy X5550 while there are many much cost effective alternatives out there.

    Cheers,

The main reason people go with Xeon instead of Core i3/5/7 is the fact you can run 2 of them in 1 server, while the Core CPUs are limited to 1 per server.
And then there is the name of course, Xeon being considered server CPUs and Core i7 being considered desktop CPUs.

    Yet more interesting stuff,

    PassMark report on two CPUs:
    E3-1270 @3.4Ghz = 9142
    X5570 = @2.93Ghz = 5555

yet, another benchmark site (Cinebench) says that X5570 is better!!!
    E3-1270 @3.4Ghz = 6.74
    X5570 = @2.93Ghz = 10.33

I guess the question remain, how reliable are these benchmark sites.

    Cheers,

It's not that simple. You can only put 1 i7 in a server and there's a limit to how much RAM it will take. The X55/56 series will take 2 chips and bucket loads of RAM.

In that Cinebench test they use dual X5570, hence the better result

Also depends on how the servers are configured, drivers, kernel versions, software optimisations etc.

And that is dual X5570 so yes 8 physical cpu cores + 8 cpu threads versus E3-1270 only 4 physical cpu cores and 4 threads.

Also, Core i7 2600s aren't good for servers because there is some kind of bug with Linux that if you start the machine up with or without a monitor connected to any of the ports for the integrated graphics and then you connect/disconnect or just disconnect the console it screws up the PCI bus which includes USB/any cards you have in the PCI express slot.

    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=670948

It does this on pretty much every linux distro/version..

So I guess that would be the main reason =)

    a) you can put two of them in one server
    b) your memory will be ECC and triple-channeled with QPI @ 6.4GTs
    c) high quality bridges and motherboard overall (well if buying from brand assemblies)

The architecture actually makes the difference. The new architecture makes the Core i processors faster than older Xeons.
