Has anyone thought about offering a PAYG offering for hosting similar to PAYG mobile phones? Where as the customer would top up and then pay per gb of bandwidth and gb of space. For example...
Customer Topsup £15
They then get charged per GB of space used per month, e.g. 50p per GB and per GB of bandwidth they use. That way the customer wouldn't have a monthly subscription but just tops up when their allocation of credit has been used. Essentially you get what you pay for and get to use it all, and if you don't use it you keep it...
What do you guys think? I am thinking of launching it but wanted to professional opinions of WHT prior to doing so. Obviously this reduces overselling the nilch, a good thing for the customer.
I wouldn't say it's impossible, however the customer that you would be attracting with this model (light, mostly non-commercial use I would imagine) would be just as happy to go with one of the cheaper monthly plans from any budget host. Your service may be much better than theirs, but how are you going to convince them that? After all, they're going to end up paying the same, or not a lot less, with your PAYG scheme anyway.
I don't necessarily think its an unusable idea, but it definitely requires some thinking (and probably testing!)
I am thinking of utilising a domain I have without any development on it to test the idea. I think it is an interesting prospect, but I do agree, the customer it would attract wouldn't have the technical know how to differentiate between an oversold host offering more for less and this model without overselling and a pay for what you use model, which would evidently cost a little more in the long run, I think this would be just as much education as service.
I guess I could setup a test and advertise it and see how it goes down.
