Is Pingdom reliability?
Hi Guys,
I'm using Pingdom free service (and WatchMouse, WasItUp...) to monitor my website, my uptime is really terrible. (Look at the picture in attachment)
I've asked my host provider about it, they said that their server uptime is 100%?
So, is Pingdom reliability to monitor a website?
Thank in advanced,
Giang

I have heard that pingdom.com is very good and that most providers use it.If you ask me I would rather trust pingdom then the hosting provider based on the uptime statistics...

Maybe the server was up but the network was down / having issues?
If your provider is monitoring the server/s maybe they are using a server in the same datacentre so when there is network issues they never actually see them?
Don't know just trowing some stuff out there.

Here is a reply from the support:
I am afraid that I am unable to comment any third party websites that are pretending to be showing correct information.
I looked at the server logs directly and the it does not have any downtime lately even for few minutes, so there is nothing to worry about.
I will try to ask them about network down or having issues

Pingdom should alert you when your site goes down, did you try accessing your website when it was supposedly down?

Pingdom monitors with 25 or 30 servers
I have Pingdom monitor two (2) of my web sites, that are on Shared hosting, with a provider in Connecticut, USA. I have them monitor every five (5) minutes.
I believe Pingdom monitors with 25 or 30 servers, located around the world, and they rotate. They are very accurate.
I do not have them monitor every minute, because I do not want to get more notifications. If I did, the uptime would probably be a little lower than shown below, which was for May 2011, because of network connectivity issues, etc.
Uptime Downtime Outages Response time

A few days ago, in June 2011, there was a brief outage, of approximately ten (10) minutes, reported by Pingdom.

When pingdom first detects your server being down, it runs a trace route from that location and records it, then runs a trace route from a different location - you should be able to pull these up and provide them to your web host so they can look into the cause of the outage.

As stated above, server downtime and network downtime are two very different things. They seem to be sticking with "the server never went down" line, so maybe it was their network failing.
Have you provided the pingdom logs to your provider? Do you mind telling us the name of your provider?

Welp, if they are going to use the terms "server never went down" that could mean a lot of things. That could be a result from monitoring the power. Hostleet mentioned Network Downtime, but what about unresponsiveness or services restarted without reboots?

We have found Pingdom to be more accurate and responsive over Alertra. Their API is OK but I'm hoping they make changes to it over the coming months.
When we first migrated to them there was an issue with false positives that their techs were able to quickly identify and resolve.
All-in-all a great service for a great price!

Also check your logs to make sure your web server wasn't throwing out html error codes intermittently. Note that pingdom checks whether your 'website' is down, not necessarily server ping.

The support person always tell me that the log on the server say that it's 100% uptime, and I have to trust them.
I've asked for any 3rd monitor party that accurate but they could give one and again told me to trust them.

It is fully possible for a server to physically be online and connected to a network but overloaded/overwhelmed to the point of causing Pingdom to time out and fail. This would be actual downtime (i.e. sites are not working) but logging into the server and checking for outages will show nothing.
Unfortunately if they're going to rely upon the uptime as reported by the OS for any credits/refunds then you're going to be SOL even with super terrible providers because usually the servers are ONLINE, they're just not properly managed and/or are overloaded.█ Michael Denney - MDDHosting.com - Proudly hosting more than 37,700 websites since 2007.
