Who is the best Dedi Provider?

I've done a lot of market research when it comes to which dedicated server provider is best. Practically everyone has the same guarantees and products, it's just the prices that change. Of course, as we all know, price isn't always the best indicator of quality in the industry.

I am planning on purchasing a couple of servers, a few to host shared hosting customers, and the rest to host a rather large PHP/MYSQL web application.

I'm looking for a QUALITY host. I want someone who sticks with their guarantees, very low downtime (if any), great support, and have an array of options/server configurations to select from.

I really appreciate any feedback I receive, you are saving me some head aches!

    Thanks again!

There are a lot of great providers out there, it just depends what one will work for you. Are you capable of managing the server yourself?

Your question is very broad and difficult to answer. What's your budget? What's your preferred location? Do you want the server to be managed?

    Sorry about that -

-My budget is pretty much limitless, but as everyone, I like to save money.
-Location being Central USA for the quickest connections for all USA users.
-I would like the server to be managed as well.

Can't go wrong with steadfast for these requirements. They have a major Chicago location which is Central US, and when I was using them, I found their network, hardware, and support to be quite good. I *think* they offer managed services, but you'll have to ask them about that. They're not the cheapest in the world, but for what you get, they're not the most expensive either.

hostdime is the best i've been with so far, it's managed and I have not had 1 problem with them at all! They are located in Orlando so it's not central but you should give them a look!

Maybe you should have a look at softlayer not sure if they provide managed servers.

    You also have liquidweb.

I agree CHI has some of the best connections around. Either Chicago or any other city in the middle of the nation would be ideal.

    Good luck!

Just use rackspace so you can flaunt their huge budgets around to get a refund if you have 2 milliseconds of downtime.

    ameteria,

I think going with a managed server is a good route. You will get all the hand holding help you may need and also any input or advice.

  17. #17
Thanks everyone for the input, it's been very helpful! I'm going to be doing some research across the companies recommended and I'll hopefully be migrating within the month.

    Thanks everyone!

Location for US traffic in the US doesn't really matter much in terms of overall user experience, NYC, Chicago, LA its really all the same in the grand scheme things for US-centric. So don't let region effect your choice. You are looking at a max 20ms to 30ms difference in traffic going from one coast to another compared to staying in the central US, which is negligible.

Gigenet are pretty good too. Tickets are responded to quickly and their connections are ROCK solid.

Personally I am moving from them because the price and location didn't fit, but in terms of service I can't fault them.

Does Gigenet are more expensive when compared to other providers?

Gigenet have lots of different servers for different budgets. One thing I don't like about them is they charge a small fortune for things like extra RAM compared to EU providers, but then again so do a lot of US providers.

I had a small server with them for years and the level of service, especially from the upper management is fantastic, they really can't do enough for you.

It is a shame about the latency issue to Europe, otherwise I would still have servers with them.

    WebNX & TMS (2006-present), Liquidweb, CyberWurx & Softlayer (2004-2008).

Frankly, every single one of the providers mentioned so far don't seem to measure up to what Hostgator offer.

I've been with countless of dedicated server providers. Honestly NONE of those providers I've been with have been able to compare with GigeNET. I use to own a game server provider business for 4 years and I'd have 3 different Chicago providers for my customers to choose from. After they all tested, about 95% of my Chicago clients all wanted GigeNET. It was proven to them to be the fastest network among the 3. I've sent tons of tickets to GigeNET. Some just for fun...and I just can't get them to take longer than 10 minutes for a reply. It's really impossible. Also, aside from that, they ALWAYS work with you to get a custom deal. Never had I had to pay full price on their website...I always get a good 10-15% discount on servers and on custom deals. You really can't go wrong with GigeNET. And for the past years I've used them...not a single un-notified downtime.

but a few other providers that I think are still good: SteadFast, SoftLayer, LimeStoneNetworks and WebNX.

if you need a provider that provides multiple locations: ColoCrossing and UbiquityServers are both fine

Thanks for reply, why don't you give them a feeback, as you have been with them for a long time.

Put a ribbon on that and you have LimestoneNetworks,

We have been with them for quite some time and have had no physical downtime caused by them, I would rate their support (scale 1-5) a 5 considering you get response times in literally 1-5 minutes and generally a resolution in the first 10-15 minutes (Depending on the severity of the situation).

If you really want a wide variety of server options then you should go with a custom quote (Which of course you can get). Be sure to ask for Clint to get the best deals however.

Hey, I am also looking for a couple of managed dedicated servers. Same as you - one is for shared hosting with 200-220 domains and the other is for a portal we developed last year.

Have narrowed it down to Servint and Wiredtree. Do you want to suggest any, based on your research so far, or share notes?

That is really hard question to answer in here because a lot of providers do have good network and have very nice support stuff. Maybe there is no ideal dedicated server provider in the word at all.

  38. #38
So the list of good managed dedicated server providers looks like:

    hostdime
    liquidweb
    softlayer
    Steadfast
    Codero
    Ubiquity Servers
    DedicatedNOW
    Gigenet
    knownhost
    LimestoneNetworks
    SingleHop

Should Servint be added to this list? Or is it too much above or below the bracket?

Would also appreciate if the OP lets us know who he decided to go with?

    Aarkay777,

I've been a previous or current customers with most of the providers you mentioned and I can say all of them met my standards in a dedicated server provider host, but I do still believe some are better than others for sure.

Never heard of Servint and never heard of knownhost.

all the other providers in my opinion are well known/respected in the hosting industry.

Thank you for the mention! Just one doubt on this list I don't think everyone on this list is a fully managed dedicated server provider, are they?
