    Windows VPS - Short term

Afternoon everyone. Here is the skinny. I have about 11,000 pictures on Flickr that I want to transfer to a new photo hosting service. I am thinking the best way to do this is by downloading all of the pics (I dont know the exact size) to a VPS (Windows) due to local BW caps, and the high speed of datacenter connections. So a couple of questions.

    1. Any other way of accomplishing that I am trying?
    2. Is a Windows VPS the only way?
    3. Anyone know of any companies that rent VPS by the day?
    4. Any thoughts as to how much disk space is needed?

    Cheers,

Using a Windows VPS for this job is a pretty ingenious solution. I'm not familiar with the Flickr control panel, but it's also possible that you could use a regular web hosting account with shell access to 'wget' the files directly to your web space.

I dont think the wget command would work here, as you would actually need to know the exact file name (flickr creates some pretty obscure paths for their storage). The reason I am suggesting Windows is that there are multiplr Flickr Download tools for Windows.

    Thanks for the info.

Mount your flicker account in linux to e.g. /home/flickr then simply cp the files over to a local dir done.

    Good Morning,

I'm not sure what flickr has the photos as..
But i had a look in my picture album and my average jpg file is 2.5mb . So 2.5 x 11000 is around 27GB .

Also take into consideration the size of windows itself. It varies from version but i think windows 2008 once installed is over 10gb.

I would personally go with a windows vps with a 50GB HDD to be safe.

    Regards.

Thanks for the advice. I am gonna go the Windows VPS route, however, I only need it for a few hours/days. What is the best option for the EC2?

    Cheers,
