Question Driving someone else's vehicle: Is it legal?

In America,if I had my own license and I had permission to drive my friend's car which my friend has insurance on, is that legal? Because if the police pulled me over and said can I show them my license and insurance I could show the police my license but not insurance because it's not my car, so is that legal?

Yes it's perfectly legal as long as your friend lets you drive the car

Depends on your state laws and insurance policy.

Driving without proper car insurance coverage will get your license suspended in some states.

Well I'm sure the OP has insurance and the owner of the car as insurance.

I'm not sure how that would work with the whole insurance deal though.

Be sure the owner's insurance covers non-family members they let borrow their car - some people save money by either going to minimum coverage when they loan their car, or worse, have a "named driver only" policy.

The first event just means if you wreck it, you're responsible for the damage - the second means you are driving uninsured if you don't have your own policy.

It is legal as long as your friend gives you permission to do so. You're also responsible for any damages.

if you are going to drive his car long term, i suggest you obtain a "Non-Owner's Policy"

this type of policy is dirt cheap (like $300 for the entire year). and it covers you driving any car that you do not own. it's only liability though, so it will only cover you when you get in an accident that is your own fault. if the car is broken into or stolen, it won't cover that. but your friend's insurance will cover that, so you're good.

All you need is uninsured/underinsured motorist policy.

That is right some insurance will not cover someone else who is not on the policy. You need to call you're insurance company and check about it before hand.

I believe that you are right. As far as I know, insurance companies are likely to cover it if it involves a driver who drove it very occasionally and then had an accident. But if a frequent driver had an accident, and he/she wasn't on the policy as an additional driver, I imagine that you could experience significant issues.

Yeah, you need to be on the policy as an additional driver.

You insure the vehicle which has a primary driver. Occasional drivers are permitted.
