Question Which server is better (faster)?

I don't know too much about CPUs...

All the other server specs are the same except the CPUs. (Both servers have same ram, raid, etc..)

    Server 1:

    Processor Information
    Total processors: 4

    Vendor
    AuthenticAMD
    Name
Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 265
    Speed
    1792.513 MHz
    Cache
    1024 KB
    Server 2:

    Total processors: 8

    Vendor
    GenuineIntel
    Name
    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3460 @ 2.80GHz
    Speed
    2799.874 MHz
    Cache
    8192 KB
    Thanks for your help.

(Basically... the first server is what we have now. About 400 customers with 650 websites, plus emails, etc...

The second server is what we are being offered for about the same price.

    I am trying to decide:

    - If the second server is a lot better.
    - If yes, then is it worth all the work (downtime for customers, change of IPs, etc.) to do the switchover.

    Thanks!

X3460 is 4 cores, 8 threads. Not "8 processors." It's a nice step up over the AMD, but only worth doing if you are currently CPU limited.

    Have to be joking.

The second server is so much better, that I cannot even express it.

    Hello,

Go for the second server. But it all depends on the traffic, you need to choose a server.

    Is your current server overloaded?

Are you happy with the current host.. if yes then ask yourself do i really need to move??

Don't touch it if it works... will this new host offer you the same service??

btw, second server will be much better.

There are generation gaps between the cpu arch.... x3460 is way better

1st one's a dual core 2nd one is a quad core . Go for the 2nd if you need the performance .

Even if 2nd one was a dual core and at the same clock speed, it would still smoke that opteron.

The x3460 was state of the art maybe last year, the opteron 265 was state of the art about 4-5 years ago. It's a pretty easy decision really.

If it's worth the downtime to your clients or not is a totally different question. Is your current server performing well enough? If not, then you'll do well to get the second server, and start by migrating people over who are particularly resource heavy on your current server. Ideally you'd just keep both servers so you wouldn't have to disrupt your customers by moving all of them, but if that's not within budget, then you have to ask yourself if the disruption is worth it in general. If you lose 10 clients that each pay you $10 / mo because you switched servers, that's $100 / mo in revenue you'll never get back.

Moving servers is always a risk. But if done correctly it can cause no downtime at all. Just a case of preparing the new server beforehand and doing the move with plenty of time left in the old server. So give yourself a full week and you can have both servers operational and serving your customer's sites during that time period. This should prevent any problems occuring due to dns propagation delays. About the only thing I would worry about is a) mail getting stuck on the old server b) inconsistencies between old and new server versions of dynamic sites that get a lot of updates. So set a low TTL for you DNS records beforehand to minimize the risk of this sort of thing happening.

If you need to compare CPUs the smart thing is to use http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html - they're well trusted benchmarks.

Also moving server shouldn't really cause downtime.

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

Dual Core AMD Opteron 265 rank = 630
    Intel Xeon X3460 rank = 54
    Lower is better.

And are you/clents noticing any issues with the _processing_ - what does something like "top" say your load is etc ?

If not, then simply ask for 35% off the current server to stay on it

"Better" - no idea what that means
Capable of processing more instructions in the same amount of time - yes - exactly how much more is a long-debate - but it's about 40% "faster" and has twice as many CPU cores (which may or may not make any difference at all depending on your software, o/s, etc)

Personally - no, it's not worth disrupting your clients simply because you _want_ (rather than need) to change servers - and why do you need to change IP's etc ?
