    Tailor Made Servers... [solved]

Im using windows server 2008 r2 with them and my remote desktop connection has been horrible the past two days.

I think it is the host as well because their 100mbyte file from here:
    http://72.9.144.4/100mb.bin
is download for me at 30 kilobytes per second...

Anyone else having this super slow speeds with them the past 2 days or so?
This is really hurting my gameservers that i host. And I pay quite alot for the service (About $300 a month)

What in the world could be causing me to get such a slow speed from them then?

My speed test here is reporting 50mbps down...
Download files from other sites all working well.

Where did you run the speed test on the server? Did you go to speedtest.net?

Speed is pretty good from NYC as well:

    # wget http://72.9.144.4/100mb.bin -O /dev/null
    --2011-05-31 18:34:11-- http://72.9.144.4/100mb.bin
    Connecting to 72.9.144.4:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
    Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
    Saving to: `/dev/null'

    100%[======================================>] 104,857,600 10.1M/s in 10s

    2011-05-31 18:34:22 (9.85 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]

I did a return traceroute from one of our TMS servers to your IP address and I'm seeing some minor packet loss on the 6th and 7th hops:

    1 router.dfw-datacenter.com (67.222.150.1) 0.390 ms 1.138 ms 0.295 ms
    2 72.249.0.65 (72.249.0.65) 0.367 ms 0.352 ms 0.347 ms
    3 xe-4-1-0.jbdr2.dallas.colo4.com (206.123.64.150) 0.287 ms 0.295 ms 0.311 ms
    4 xe-4-2-0.er2.dfw2.us.above.net (64.124.196.225) 0.645 ms 0.627 ms 0.610 ms
    5 xe-3-1-0.dal33.ip4.tinet.net (77.67.71.165) 0.838 ms 0.798 ms 0.821 ms
    6 xe-0-2-0.tor10.ip4.tinet.net (89.149.187.77) 72.403 ms 73.198 ms 73.730 ms
    7 cogeco-cable-canada-gw.ip4.tinet.net (77.67.69.238) 73.790 ms * 74.324 ms

There's about 7-10% packetloss and that could cause the slowness you're describing. It would be something that Cogeco would have to fix, unfortunately if you call them you'll probably get no where with the front line reps... eventually someone important will notice and fix.

I was pinging your home IP address from TMS and here's what it shows:

440 packets transmitted, 402 packets received, 8.6% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 55.528/56.626/64.397/0.885 ms

Even a little bit of packet loss will interfere with the remote desktop and can make downloads appear slow..

There's nothing you can do on your end, although you could keep bugging your ISP until they ask someone higher up to investigate. I mean on the surface the problem looks to be with one of your ISP's carriers, Tinet, and Cogeco would probably have to contact them to get it fixed. Here's another traceroute to your cable modem:

    1 router.dfw-datacenter.com (67.222.150.1) 0.347 ms 0.307 ms 0.286 ms
    2 72.249.128.109 (72.249.128.109) 0.405 ms
    72.249.0.65 (72.249.0.65) 0.410 ms
    72.249.128.5 (72.249.128.5) 0.406 ms
    3 206.123.64.154 (206.123.64.154) 0.389 ms 0.338 ms 0.327 ms
    4 xe-4-2-0.er2.dfw2.us.above.net (64.124.196.225) 0.704 ms 0.687 ms 0.653 ms
    5 xe-3-1-0.dal33.ip4.tinet.net (77.67.71.165) 0.900 ms 0.849 ms 0.810 ms
    6 xe-0-2-0.tor10.ip4.tinet.net (89.149.187.77) 72.301 ms 72.848 ms 72.776 ms
    7 * cogeco-cable-canada-gw.ip4.tinet.net (77.67.69.238) 73.530 ms 73.414 ms

The asterisk in the 7th hop indicates some packetloss. Pinging that specific IP address shows:

    --- 77.67.69.238 ping statistics ---
20 packets transmitted, 15 packets received, 25.0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 72.555/73.951/75.192/0.864 ms

Oops! The IP that's causing the packetloss is 89.149.187.77 which would make any later IP addresses (e.g.: 77.67.69.238) appear to also have packetloss. All IP addresses before 89.149.187.77 are not showing any packetloss and that's how you can identify where the problem usually is...
