Dilemma: $1,300 via PayPal or $700 via Escrow?

I'm selling a website (domain + content), I posted it up on a site for sale and put a BIN of $1,300 and had a auction running from $400 with a reserve of $500.

Some guy from Nepal showed interest in the auction at around the $600 mark, put a few bids in and it got to $900 (between the 5 or so bidders) before he did a BIN at $1,300.

Now, he's wanting to use PayPal instead of Escrow saying that his country dont allow him to do wire transfers. I've said no so far and insisted on using Escrow.

I've messaged the other people who bid on the auction stating that I've been having trouble with the winning bidder and asked if they're interested, one has come back saying he'll buy for $700 through Escrow as planned.

    What would you do?

Thanks guys, I didn't think I was being stupid by refusing the higher amount via PayPal.

    Cheers.

Lol, Nepal is a high risk country to begin with. Stick to Escrow.

Why any reasons to avoid? It would be great if someone can share details.

I'm not generalizing, per se. But, I'd be extremely cautious of handling 500+ USD through Paypal. Since one chargeback and you're done for.

And regarding the high risk statement, I'd guess that they're famous for the same reason Indonesia/Turkey are at the current moment.

Definitely choose Escrow over PayPal. PayPal was worth it only if you trusted the buyer.

He claims he's got a US Verified account, his "friend" is letting him use it.
It just reeks "scam!!" all over, plus if the account is tied to a credit card, they have 120 days to charge-back.

The Chargeback can be done from any country right. Scammers are there every where... .

Escrow all the way, a guaranteed sum is better than a headache.

    ESCROW!

Why would he offer $1,300 with winning bid of $700, id ask if you would accept PayPal before even bidding. Maybe throw another $50 for your trouble but a jump of $600 and especially from a country that does not have as much capital as the USA? Yeah, lets think about it for a while..... NOT.

I wish you the best of luck!

Just a quick follow up, I managed to get the full $1,300 from one of the other bidders via Escrow.

All is well in this case, no lost listing fee's

Congratulations! Sometimes holding firm can work out, as it did here, especially when another willing buyer comes forward.

Did the one that offered you $700 raise his/her offer up to $1300, or was this a different bidder?

    Congrats on the follow up!

Just for reference, in a situation like that:

I never tried this but how about sending a Paypal invoice and clearly stating in the terms and conditions that "No return, refund, or cancellation, or Paypal disputes<~~ allowed after payment."

That way when he tries to dispute through PayPal you have some kind of common ground. Not sure if it works but it should right? Once you pay, you are bound to those terms and conditions.

Unfortunately, you can't override the PayPal Terms of Service with such a text add-on. Nice try, though!

Sometimes so-called "intangible items" (e.g. digital items) can be safe, but the real issue may be if the PayPal account is stolen. If, say, a credit card chargeback is filed, you may ultimately be out of luck as a seller.

Good deal. Hope nothing like this comes up again for you. Just can't be too careful anymore these days.
