Backup Server, RAID 6 or RAID 5 + Hot Spare?
Your preference and why? I'm leaning toward RAID 6.
Thanks.

How many drives and what size are we talking about? What RAID controller? All relevant before I'd decide between RAID-5+hot spare or RAID-6.

Adaptec 5805, with 8x 2TB Enterprise SATA (Seagate). Write cache disabled on drives and controller to save costs (no BBU). For my backup server throughput is not as important as data integrity.

They'll both give you the same usable capacity. The RAID6 configuration will be more reliable.

There's no way I'd go RAID5. Think about this, with that setup, the moment your array is under the highest risk (during a rebuild) it has zero additional resiliency. Another failure, and the array is toast.

More than 10TB on raid 5 is not a good idea... Go to RAID6!
