Welcome to WHT, you will sure find many providers here. Firstly I would recommend looking at the offers section of these forums. Also if you could post your requirements (Server location, budget, support needs etc) this will give me people an idea on who to recommend for you.

    Hope this helps!

What type of budget are you looking at? The definition of how cheap something is can be relative to the consumer

Do you currently have an active forum, or will you be starting one? If you have some traffic or bandwidth stats it would be helpful so we can point you in the right direction.

Although its definitely possible to get web hosting for about a couple bucks a month, you are probably not going to find to many web hosting providers offering dependable services for around that price range (not unless its part of some promotional offer). With that being said, for your type of website any introductory web hosting package should do you justice (at least for now).

No, what I meant is most companies offer 3-4 web hosting packages, with the first package being the most affordable (because it comes with less resources). Since your site is going to be a low usage site, just focus on the basic/starter plans that all web hosts offer.

Do they set limits on the amount of members you can have or the data storage allowance

Web hosts wont put a limit on the amount of users can access your board at the same time, however they will put restrictions on your diskspace/bandwidth/concurrent mysql connect and other usage limits (which are usually outlined in the web hosts terms of service).

Still, although it is always smart (and highly recommended) to familiarize your-self with the limits that are put into place by your potential web-host. For your particular website, most of those limits are going to be irrelevant (at least in the beginning).

As far as recommendations, there are definitely some solid web hosts on the net, but is $2 per month really the most you are willing to pay?

In general I would recommend staying away from companies that claim to offer unlimited diskspace/bandwidth. Some companies that might be worth checking out are stablehost, mddhosting, hawkhost and downtownhost. I've never used any of there services, but based off my experience here on WHT, their customers are pretty much always posting nothing but positive reviews about their services and their reps are always active here on these forums.

    Hope that helps!

Coolhandle might be new in your list but it's recommended linux hosting provider, their new work is integrated with cloudflare so the uptime/speed is reliable.

    I can recommend Virtual Names / aka UKServers.net. (http://www.virtualnames.co.uk)

They are based in the UK (so UK-based phone support, and UK-hours for tickets etc.). Their servers are near Maidenhead, so you get low latency from UK / Europe. I used to host several sites with them, still do host one, and everything is always very responsive and their support is excellent.

There are two draw-backs to be aware of. 1. They use their own control panel, which I find less versatile than cPanel. That need not be a problem for you. The main inconvenience is that I never found a way to upload an archive and extract it server-side. 2. Their packages are all for one domain only. For hosting one domain, it's good value. To host more than one, you get to do it under one account, so you can share common image files etc., but the cost increases in proportion to the number of domains. It was for this reason that I looked elsewhere for most of my sites, otherwise I was perfectly happy.

The cheapest package they offer is 20 per year, which works out about $30 per year ($2.50 a month). That stretches your target budget slightly, but probably worth it.

CloudFlare has it's ups and downs when their datacenters are attacked, but at the better part they are actually a great bunch to work with, must admit they are pleasently "very responsive" to queries and concerns and always looking for feedback

A little tip while searching for where to host your forum.
Forums use a lot of traffic, read the host's TOS before diving for any host.

That is the same as any site with a large margin of genetic hits, the more hits the more traffic you'll consume, I'd be looking more at the overal CPU rather than bandwidth in this instance.

Bluehost pays phpbb so much for everyone who signs up through the links on their phpbb.com site. In reality it is means of marketing for Bluehost rather than a honest unbiased recommendation by phpbb.

I would not recommend Bluehost or Hostmonster or Fastdomain. All three are run by the same management and share the same facility and hardware.

Agreed, Bluehost was nothing but a nightmare in my eyes. Was running a simple and "very new" forum running off phpBB 2.0.22 back in the day and chose Bluehost as an optional service to test with and it was nothing but slow, unresponsive, and a hell of a time waster.

The actual administration section of phpBB took around 2-3 minutes to finish loading with errors on the page, 3-4hrs later I came back after getting frustrated with the same problem slow and unresponsive.

You may want to avoid this option, as I know now if I am correct they are owned by the Endurance Internation Group

I would suggest staying away from hosts that offer unlimited space and bandwidth. Most, if not all have limits hidden in the TOS which actually limits both the space and bandwidth.

The hosts listed on phpBB's website are not recommended hosts, they are simply paying to advertise on the site. It is no different than this site, all the banners and links are not recommended hosts, they are paid advertisements.

You just need to look around and find a host that meets your needs. Try talking to a few of them on live chat or call them. Shared hosting is normally fine for hosting phpBB, Vbulletin and several other forums. The main issue is when they are hosted on so called unlimited plans and you have a little traffic and get shut down for exceeding the TOS.
