Anti Virus for a new laptop...

    Hi guys,

I've recently started a new job in London, but I commute every day. I have decided to get a new laptop, its brilliant - Work said they would 'try' to supply me with an AntiVirus. However, they've changed their minds and I am now left without one.

I didn't get one from the shop I got the laptop from as the bafoons that run the shop struggle to find the on/off button...

So, what free anti-viruses are there?

This laptop will be mainly for PHP and MySQL coding during my commute as I spend around 3~ hours on the coach.

I look forward to reading your comments.

We use Avira for Business. They also offer a free version called Avira Personal. They're great!

As long as you're not going to surf to any dodgy sites you can get away with any decent free software- Avira, Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG free etc.

I gave personally used Avg for years without a problem. A lot of people here might say that it hogs resources but I gave only experienced this on my older laptop some eons ago.

Norton, Norton, Norton. it's not free, but it's 100% worth the cost
If you absolutely insist on free, go with Microsoft Security Essentials, but remember, you get what you pay for.

I've been using Avast (http://avast.com) for about 2 year's now and had no problems with it. They have options for PC and Mac. I would highly recommend them too you! The free version works great for me; but if you were ever too need more protection they offer cheap plans to upgrade! Best of luck!

Norton's cleaned up over the past couple years. If you're running a dinosaur, of course, that's going to make your PC slow, but that's NOT Norton's fault, that's your own.

I use AVG Free. I love it, and have it installed on 5 different computers, and as long as you keep it up-to-date you shouldn't have any issues.

Is NOD32 still any good? It used to be pretty good, but I haven't used it in ages.
