    [Issues] Transferring account for client

Client provided us with a cpanel backup file from their client and asked us to transfer/restore it to their server.

The original file name is: backup-thu-may-26-16_01_19-2011.tar

I uploaded this to their /home directory (VPS client) as I would any other manual backup file. WHM did not detect it, so I add a '.gz' to the end. Bingo, it's now recognized.

The backup has no username in the filename, so there was no way to really 'restore' it. So, I add the username in the format that WHM wants (backup-date_time_user.tar.gz) and attempt the restore.

    Errors occur.

I try to rename in another cPanel/WHM required format and same deal.

All of the manual restores I have done for our accounts have been in the format of: backup-5.21.2011_18-51-46_[ACCOUNT].tar.gz

I know 'how' to do restores, i've done many in my time. But for some reason I can not get this to work properly, and am looking for some quick help from WHT.

EDIT: When asked, client says the file I was provided is the exact file downloaded from his client's previous server. No renaming, no altering. Yet I am unable to restore it...

I don't know if it's the fact its 4AM and i'm overlooking something here, or if I am doing something incorrectly. Either way, I need to get this resolved quickly.

Did your client supply you with the backup or did you do it yourself?
If your client created this backup there may be problems with it and I suggest that you get the backup yourself.
As you said you added .gz to the end of the file and this most likely would of corrupted the contents.
As I said I suggest you manually log onto their cPanel and created a .gz backup yourself.

Well our client is a fully managed VPS client of which operates a Shared hosting company from their VPS.

They have a client who is wanting to switch from (bluehost, I think) to them. However they were unable to successfully perform a transfer on their initial attempt by using WHM to old host's cPanel.

They obtained a backup from their new client's cPanel account, and uploaded it to a public space where we could then download it for a manual restore. (Download it, SSH it to their /home directory, restore via WHM)

Should of been simple, just a little time consuming.

I'd say it would be a breach of this particular client of our's privacy policy and likely a conflict of interest for us to receive their client's personal login details for us to create the backup from their old account. I don't feel comfortable asking for such details anyhow. I was just curious if there was anything I could do with the current file that I have to get it to work. I would really hate to ask them create us a new backup file because I'd hate to delay this further. They have a client who wants to switch to them, and my job right now is to make sure that happens in a timely manner.

    Hello,

The backup is not in the correct format. I could not find the cpanel username in the backup. I am really sorry to say that you won't be able to restore the given format backup.

    Thanks.

    Curtis,
From the original backup simply extract the files and then compress again to the supported extension for WHM (.gz).
If you require more information about how to do this feel free to contact me through either these forums or email.

I'm giving that a shot right now. I'll let you know how it goes in a couple of hours (the time it took to upload the original backup file)

EDIT: Nevermind, I was unable to extract it without error. I guess I will link client to this thread for proof of my attempts and ask for a new backup file to work with.

(I'm short staffed this week. Got a new guy starting tomorrow and partner returning from vacation Sunday. Typically it's not like this on our end)

By the way, are you doing a full interview with me later today?

Oh, didn't realize you were the same person I was conversing with via email. In that case, yes.

It's not really that large of a file, just a slow upload via SSH on my current connection. I traveled home this week to be with friends/family for my birthday, my connection in my home office is much faster than what I am stuck with right now.

    We'll speak later.

    Ah, this is real strange.

I have the details to the end user's Bluehost cPanel, and their backup system is not the default cPanel backup system.

My only options for downloading backups include the daily, weekly, or monthly backup of which are only provided in .tar or .zip format.

    Hmmm...

Take the .zip, extract it and then compress it to .gz
    Simple
    NOTE: You will need WinRAR

I've attempted this, all I get is extraction errors. I think this is more of a Bluehost issue with using a non-common cPanel instance and backup/restore process that isn't typical.

That'd be a breach of not only our privacy policy but also the privacy policy of our VPS client in which I am doing this for.

I appreciate your offer to help but i'll get it sorted out one way or another.

You may need to ask the client to contact Bluehost about this. Otherwise another way will be for you to transfer the filed and database manually.

Why don't you make a manually restore?

  19. #19
Yes, looks like you'll have to restore everything manually.

    1. download file from Bluehost and extract it on PC using Winrar.
    2. create cPanel account on new server
    3. rebuild the cPanel account by restoring the MySQL files and data by uploading the data to /public_html folder.

Seems the only way to go about it.

If backup is really big just wget it to the new server and extract it and copy/move files around that way.

You said you added .gz to the file name. Did you just rename it? Or did you actually gzip it? You should just need to rename the .tar to include the username as WHM expects, and then "gzip <whatever>.tar"

Do you not need to provide the actual username with cPanel? I am sure the username has to match the username that was used to generate the backup?

And the thing with rebuilding site manually is you may lose some emails. So it is best to try to restore the account properly. And since when did Bluehost stop using cPanel anyway?

It 'is' cPanel, from what I could tell. Just highly modified. Everything from the basic link structure to how backups are performed were just foreign to me.

If bluehost are anything like hostmonster in terms of their custom cPanel backups, you will need to restore them manually (as suggested by other responses). With hostmonster backups, I noticed the cPanel user/skeleton files aren't ever generated, so it's not possible to restore them via /scripts/restorepkg.

Maybe they just don't like people moving away from their services so they sabotage backups
