Understand Backlinks: A very good example to use

    Hello WHTers,

I was tidying up a presentation our company did for Digital Marketing few days ago and I remembered the example we gave about Backlinks Strategies. In some of the past seminars we were guest speakers, people (especially those not very familiar with digital marketing strategies) could not understand the Backlinks topic very well and the importance of developing quality backlinks to their website.

In the last seminar that our company was invited to speak, we gave them the following example and suddenly all of the participants faces seemed excited!

"Imagine if you are traveling to another city for the first time, looking for a specific address where your friends live ( and ofcourse you have no GPS ).
Whom would you ask to give you directions? Would you ask a couple of pedestrians holding their rucksacks (probably tourists) or a local coffee shop ?"

A direction from a local coffee shop is, undoubtedly, more reliable and trustworthy than from the pedestrians. Google evaluates the backlinks of your website as you do with getting directions. Google loves to see relevant and quality backlinks to your website/blog.

It is pointless trying to get backlinks from a web hosting reviewing site/forum to your nursery school's website... Isn't it ??

Well, you are actually referring to a system which might be already part of Google algorithm and that is relevance of links gained to subjects or niches of websites getting them and operating online. There i no doubt on this matter that links, the ones coming from relevant sources and authority domains would seem much better than easy to grab votes that might be easily established online and still not coming from valuable internet portals.

Of course even some experts believe that one way links, are still valuable, even if they come from apparently websites which are absolutely unrelated to the recipients portals online. You know, sometimes if you maintain an informative website or blog, some links would be gained even without you noticing them, and some of them may have been added editorially, even from sites not related to yours but can you call them without values?

It is virtually sure that the days of "the more links, the better" are over, and it is a fact that your site is at risk of penalties if you have lots of "artificial" links.
The way Google can stay so far ahead of the rest is by providing a search engine that returns the most relevant sites to your search. Artificially bumping your site by irrelevant backlinks counteracts that goal so it was a matter of time before Google would put a stop to that.
Quality of links is more important than ever.

Only QUALITY back links help significantly, but only those pages that have QUALITY content.
Hundreds of crap links to a page with crap content will not get it ranked high ( and run the risk of Google penalties ), whereas qualitly content will rank well without links.
The last two additions to my website prove the latter.

Those links will be from sites with a high relevance, and probably a good trust rating, which is another factor in Google algorithms.
No matter how high the quality of the content, I very much doubt an editor of a zimmer frame blog will link to a site about big game fishing. On top of that, an editiorial link will probably be in a ( lengthy ) article of high relvance.
Totally different from blog farms used by link sale companies in which links are added in low relevance articles ( not to mention one-liners ) on low relevance sites with low trust factor.

What if you have posted your links on thousands of spam forums where promotion of casino, viagra etc going on, would it give you any benefit?
