I'm not interested in a commercial venture, however I would like to convert my home system into a web server. Thus everything installed would need to be free or open source.
I want to run the server from a VM container, I don't to dedicate an OS to it since I need to run Windows for other things.
So I would need a free VM program, I was thinking VMware but I'm not sure it would be appropriate for this type of setup.
I want to run a Linux web server, probably Ubuntu or CentOS. I was wondering if there is an up to date image that has everything set up, configured and secured. So initially all I would need to do is install the image, afterwards I would need to keep everything maintained and up to date.
This is just for some side projects I am considering since I don't have money to pay for hosting. My home connection has 25 Mbps down and 25 Mbps up pipe and is a fiber connection.
Vmware ESXI its free, but the problem is that you can't install on all systems, you have to check on their site if your server is on the hardware list.
If not you can always install VMware Server (free), that can be deployed as an application under windows or linux, after that you can create your VMs
