Magento Hosting? What would you use?
I get a number of people asking me about this, I know what I think but I am wondering what the wider world thinks about Magento ecommerce sites and where and how they should be hosted.
So... you are already running a company with a 300+ product catalogue and you are setting up a new ecommerce solution running on Magento.
What kind of hosting would you use for your site and why, and which provider, and why?
Thanks

In what way does this answer any of the questions I have posed in my post? Come on, you can do better than that.

Depend of the traffic too, Magento is a resources hog, take in mind that.

Magento is very resource intensive and is not a good fit for a shared environment. I would start with either a semi-dedicated or VPS. It really depends on traffic.

Magento reacts incredibly well to opcode caching (e.g. APC) which isn't possible under most shared hosting setups where PHP is run as suPHP.
That said, good quality shared hosting with non-oversold servers with good I/O (e.g. RAID 10 SAS drives) should give adequate performance until your budget can accommodate a good quality, well optimised virtual server.

I would recommend VPS as well for magento, but if you don't have to use this software, you can consider opencart or oscommerce which can be running properly under a shared plan.

Using LiteSpeed Web Server, or mod_ruid2 with Apache, this is actually possible to do in a shared hosting environment with suPHP.

A virtual server isn't really necessary for good performance, you can definitely get good performance for Magento out of shared hosting. Whether it is appropriate to be within shared hosting will depend on your catalog site and traffic received on the site as well. For the example given by the OP, it sounds like it would probably be fine under shared hosting (given an average/reasonable amount of traffic).
Of course, performance can be bad in a shared environment with heavily overloaded/oversold servers, but if you choose wisely this won't be a problem.

Agreed with Layer0.
Although Magento is a resource hog, it can certainly be run out of quality shared hosting. With a webhost that knows how to optimize their web and mySQL services, Magento on shared hosting can outperform most standard VPS optimized by the user.
Quality shared Hosting is oftentimes > VPS...it's really the host that counts more than the platform. The same can be said if you get a budget dedicated...quality shared hosting may be able to outperform that too.

Magneto is certainly a worthwhile eCommerce platform. Running it on shared hosting or cheap VPS installations may be possible but this type of thing should only be considered for testing, evaluation, minor development, etc...
The minimum requirements take all but the best shared or VPS hosts out of the water and security / compliance issues would seem to remove the rest of these. What is the point of going through the setup, knowing that you will not be able to support the vendors and customer base required to make a profit.
As it has been mentioned, low-end eCommerce has several applications for users in this market.
If the OP is thinking of using the community version of Magneto it is worthwhile to point out the notice on their web site concerning the community version:
"For expert developers and technical enthusiasts in non-mission critical environments. Intended for those with the time and resources needed to solve issues independently."
If the OP is thinking of using the enterprise version, it would only make sense that one would expect the vendor / customer base will be such that the higher levels of PCI DSS compliance will be required. Hosting and IT staff should be closely scrutinized to ensure performance, security and professionalism expected of any enterprise.
Enterprise eCommerce is certainly one of the markets that will be affected by new technology emerging today so specific providers and hardware would be tough to pin down. Cloud will certainly be part of the discussion.

I suppose you can check the lists of the companies and other related stuff on the Magentocomerce forums. That must be the best place for the recommendations there.

If you ask me, I am glad to use gigapros.com service and should also mention that it provides unmatched speed for magento.. Their support is helpful - contact them for further details if you are interested.

If you have VPS or dedicated server you will be able to run that with no problem. But some hosts in marketing goals mostly optimize their servers for that application.
