How small is a small hosting company?

I'm referring to those provider that manages their own network and hardware. I'm not referring to those who are just buying Dedicated Server elsewhere and resell it.

So how small usually are those small hosting provider? like 3-5 staff only?

I started as a one man show in a single half-cabinet several years ago. It can be done, but expect MANY long days. With the introduction of reliable support companies it is easier now as you can get help very afford ably at night and weekends so you can get a break and make sure your customers are taken care of.

Most of the small hosting companies today are a one man show, that is why we have fly by night companies, poor support. If you are really thinking of investing into web hosting thin of at least 3 others added to your self.

I'm a one man show and not afraid to admit it.. The difference is I know there are industry people I can goto in a pinch (ie buy time), health, vacation, etc. So It's never an issue for me or my customers. Smaller is sometimes easier to manage and when your driving toward the customer experience, that is what matters.

It's better to have at least 2-3 staff. 1 can be ok though.

I would say that the majority of the people I know who run a small hosting business are a one man show. However they're often incredibly dedicated, on top of things and have a good deal of knowledge.

True that. Most are probably just very well rounded with their skillset.

I would bet there are a few hosting companies on WHT that have just a handful of customers.

And those people who were incredibly dedicated during the build up might have achieved their goal and grown to a big company.

in principle, "big company" is not a good thing to strive for. bigger an organization becomes, more problematic and inefficient it becomes. the aim should be serving more people with a small organization and resources as possible.

Ditto, one man shows are quite common in this area of work.
