WiredTree Review: Customer for 2 years

I was a customer of WiredTree from 04/2009 until 04/2011. I left WiredTree for Linode mainly because I didn't require a managed server any more. Here is my review of my time with them.

I started with their 512 vps, and after 3 months upgraded to their "hybrid" vps. The upgrade was quick but not entirely smooth. There was a Fantastico licensing problem on the new server, and for some reason my auto-pay was disabled in the move so I got late invoice notifications. As someone who always pays his bills on time, this sort of irritated me at first but WiredTree were quick to re-set up autopay and it wasn't an issue again. As with all my time with WiredTree, tickets were always responded to very quickly, usually 15 minutes or so. Joe Doss checked in on me after the upgrade just to make sure everything was ok.

I was on the "hybrid" plan vps the rest of my time with WiredTree. The server always performed well, and I never had any problems with it. The only performance issues I had were the unfortunate outages that WiredTree suffered on a larger scale recently, which weren't limited to just my server. Other than that, my uptime was really good. Ticket response, as I said, was always very fast. The techs were always professional and regardless of the time I opened a ticket (usually later at night due to my schedule) I found them always to be knowledgeable.

    What WiredTree does great:
    • Support staff is knowledgeable and very fast to respond.
    • Servers have good performance and aren't overloaded.
    • Resources are known and not oversold.
    • Even if something isn't officially "supported", staff will make a best effort to help you out, which is a huge plus.
    • They have a well earned reputation, which means they have lots of good reviews here on WHT which made me feel comfortable in choosing them.

    What "needs improvement":
    • There is no community. No forums or IRC or anything, despite Joe Doss telling me that this is something that is requested often and they should have something soon...this was 07/2009.
    • Offering better plans for the same price to new customers, but not to current customers. I understand the need to bring in new customers, but that is a bit of a slap in the face to current customers giving you money.

In the end, I did and would continue to recommend WiredTree to anyone that needs managed hosting. I never lacked faith in their ability to manage my server, and I always felt that they wanted to do their best.

    Nice review.
Hosting is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

Yeah, before I went to WiredTree I was with Linode and benefited from a free to all memory increase. The reason I left Linode was that I was in school and wanted managed hosting since I didn't have the time, and WiredTree was highly (and deservedly so) recommended. But all I have ever seen is Linode do increases across the board.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review! We're very happy to hear that you are happy with our service and would recommend us again.

Thank you for your criticism as well. Something I wanted to point out though was that we did upgrade VPS and Hybrid clients with free resources while you were a client with us during that time:

although it looks like only one may have applied to you.

In any event, if you ever need managed services again, we are here for you!

Zac, that's actually a good point, and I am sorry I missed addressing that as I want to leave as un-biased of a review as I can for others. I did benefit from an upgrade applied to all WiredTree customers, and an appreciated one at that.

What I was referring to though was when WiredTree offered an upgraded "hybrid" server to new customers that wasn't available to current customers. You can refer to ticket BSJ-335796 if you want to look at what I am talking about. I don't want this to tarnish my review of WiredTree as I was ultimately happy with my time there, but it's only fair that I point out what was an issue while I was a customer.

I do admit that this is the case, but to add some background, you asked to be changed to one of our once-yearly, very limited, "Super Specials" in 2010. We only do these specials under the condition that new services are ordered, so they are available to existing clients as well, but only for new services. Had it been a different circumstance I think you would have found us a lot more flexible. I understand that the Super Specials generate excitement a lot of times but can also generate some disappointment if you aren't in need of any additional services when we run them as they are very limited.

I really don't think this tarnishes your review, and I'm glad to have the dialogue. We take our clients feedback very seriously!

Wow! Thanks for sharing. I was talking about the 10000$ promotion that you had. Only new customers benefited

I must admit, wiredtree hosting so far is the best ever customer service support. Sometime not about how much the bandwidth or the space are, but how great is the support when you need it the most, wiredtree hosting, I will definitely recommend for.

just a random thought regarding community - linode et al are basically clusters of geeks and developers.

wiredtree likely hosts prodction sites and other hosts, fully managed, likely just businesspeople and don't socialise in that way
