    Which Virtualization Technology to Choose??

    Hello guys,
I run a small web hosting company past few years. I just offered shared hosting to my customers but now i want to offer VPS to them. I spent couple of days to find out which one to choose and I found both advantages and disadvantages on all the major one. But the only thing that confused me is which one will be best for me and my possible customers. The hardware details are as follows:

    Processor : Intel Xeon i7 W3520
    Frequency:2.66 GHz
    CPU Cores : 4
    Threads : 8
    Cache: 8MB L2 Cache
    QPI: 4.8 GT/sec
    Turbo Boost: Upto 2.93 GHz
    Architecture : 64 bits
    Memory : 24GB ECC DDR3 RAM
    Storage : 2 X 2TB SATA II
    RAID : Software RAID 0/1
Data Transfer Rate : 3 gbps each
    Network Connection : Gigabit
    Operating System : CentOS

Please help me choose the best one for this server so that I can maximize my earning and provide best thing to my customers.

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards

    Get a bigger server
RAID : Software RAID 0/1 should be minimum raid 10 4 disks
    SAS 15K instead of SATA
and I would use hardware raid not software raid my 2 cents

Depends what your customers want but with that server I would go with openvz or virtuozzo as your drive I/O will be terrible
    with that server

Okey thanx for such a quick reply.
So you want me to get hardware RAID with more disks. How many VPS can this CPU hold? Can I get 4-5 VPS here using OpenVZ?

    easily

you could get 4 to 5 with you original config
and likely still have fairly good disk I/O
    depending on the drive quality

So you mean I will have no problem hosting 4-5 VPS in this server in current configuration. I plan to split it as 4 5GB RAM VPS. Do you think it can handle all of them properly with good I/O?
I think the disk are good coz I got them from one of the best data centers in europe.

I wouldn't split it up like that. 5GB VPSes are likely going to require lots of IO, much more than your node has in all.

So what will be the wise choice right for this?
I have two similar boxes. Is it possible to make them one using cloud and splitting them for better performance?

For that server I'd go with Xen as it gives you better isolation than OpenVZ.

Good enough for your average VPS.

    Memory : 24GB ECC DDR3 RAM
    Should be adequate

    Storage : 2 X 2TB SATA II
    RAID : Software RAID 0/1
Data Transfer Rate : 3 gbps each
Depending on which brand and speed, this may not be enough.

Some 2TB drives do not RAID well and often fall out of sync with the mirror.

Also, many 2TB drives run at 5400 RPM and are not as fast as the good 1TB 7200 RPM drives. Do you really need 2TB for 4-5 VPS?

Many have suggested RAID10 and it is indeed better. It might be overkill for 4-5 VPS (depending on how much load/disk i/o). Disk I/O is often the bottleneck in a VPS, if you know you have low usage VPS, you may be able to use RAID 1.

Please help me choose the best one for this server so that I can maximize my earning and provide best thing to my customers.
This is very subjective. Do you know what your clients will be using their VPS for? If you already have clients lined up and have an idea of their CPU/disk usage, the choices needed may be relatively easy.

4-5 VPS for that CPU isn't much at all (typically). Some providers might put 20 1GB VPS in those same specs (with better disk i/o).

In the long run, if you get better disk I/O, and use something like OpenVZ and your clients don't really use 5GB, you could potentially add more than 5 VPS to that VPS Node.
