Scott/Admingeekz.com has done a lot of work with Vbulletin. He won't be the cheapest but you did ask for the best.

Best is hard to define, there is no best company, only the best for you

Specifically what problems are you having with your current configuration or are you just looking for general management and best practices? There are some standard configuration optimizations and then there is more intense configurations specifically applicable depending on what type of user activity the forum generates, do you use any popular plugins/addons for vbulletin?

It is important to find a provider that has experience dealing with large forums generally these will be the older, more established providers with a history of service to larger clients.

im sorry to hi-jack this thread with a question of my own, but is there any way (im using c-pannel, op isnt) to give someone admin permissions without giving them the root password?

i need help with something (thats not true i need help with everything) but i have already established forums, web pages, and blogs i dunno how i can let someone help without placing myself at risk.

I use JohnnyD and he has done a great job optimizing my server + forums. I have a 300,000+ member site and it runs great.

The unfortunate side-effect of one-man shows, while everyone has to start somewhere it is hard for a business to place their trust into a single person that may or may not be available based upon their schedule, health, other job, schooling, etc.

Very true, however at that time - I was only involved in one-time projects and that thread in particular was in regards to a personal project of mine.

Now thinking about it, I actually had some great work done by Scott from AdminGeekz, for when I wasn't able to attend to my projects. AdminGeekz hold a lot of experience and a great skill set in LAMP performance (especially vBulletin optimisation and management), so OP - I'd recommend getting in contact with them. You'll find a lot of server management companies on WHT, but very few specialise in optimisation and management for specific applications.
